It seems that a Bunsen-burner-like duct at the fuel injector tip can enhance air-fuel mixing and greatly decrease soot formation at the same time NOx is held low. Retrofits may even be possible, but no clue just when or if this may be ready for market.

    Can Diesel Finally Come Clean?
Fuel injection through Bunsen burner–inspired tubes could cut soot emissions

If it works for diesel, should it also work for gasoline direct-injection soot issues too?

Don't see this working with a "direct injection" type of setup because there is next to ZERO extra space at the end of the injector to add something like this. Now......if the injection already happens upstream from the intake valve, that's a whole 'nuther ball game.

Ah yes the Faraday/Desdega Burner named after Robert Bunsen :)

Liked for link to SciAm. They have some very good writers.
