Eco mode and EV mode

Your picture didn't work, but if the EV isn't on, your ICE is still running. Most likely, your car isn't fully warmed up yet, but you are getting over 100 mpgs at that current moment in time.

 

It looks like your EV mode is on and you are running on just battery.

 

The simple approach to understanding the "EV" indicator is to just keep in mind the fact that the engine will shut off and times and other times it will continue spinning but not consume any fuel.

The system will seek out efficiency opportunities. Having a power-split-device makes that very convenient. In fact, you'll see that happening frequently... hence the EV switching often and at seemingly unpredictable times.

Xpcman was last here over four years ago. But, at any rate, that's not not what he said. When you regenerate by braking or coasting, that energy came from the gas engine. Braking converts energy supplied by the gas engine into electricity. The only source of energy for the Prius, except in the Prime or PiP, is gas. (Unless you pick it up and carry it up a hill so you can coast back down it.) His entire statement was spot on. Some of the potential energy in the gas gets converted to kinetic energy (motion) by the ICE. Braking or coasting converts some of that kinetic energy back into potential energy (electricity). In both conversions, a great deal of energy is lost to heat, which is why gliding w/o regenerating is less wasteful.
