I am in urgent need of a response to a queston presented to me this morning by my pastor.
He bought a new Prius yesterday, and this morning has read in the owner's manual that people with pacemakers should be cautious of
    riding in the car.
Has ANYONE read this, or heard anything like this about any radiation effects and the health and safety of the Prius???
The pastor is considering backing out of the deal today, if it is going to endanger his children.
ANY immediate feedback will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Exactly what does his manual say?

My 2010 manual refers to pacemaker wearers avoiding the smart key antenna system. Since many new cars have a smart key system, it's not just a Prius problem, but Toyota thinks it's enough of a concern to mention it. If he going to go tinfoil hat, he should avoid all cars with any type of a smart key system

A search of my manual doesn't mention any pacemaker wearer precautions because of the hybrid system.

I suspect that even the Toyota owners manual smart key system warning is paranoia, but then I'm not wearing a pacemaker. There are lots of RF systems in everyday life that radiate stronger RF field than a smart key system.

See attachment below for what my manual says.

Tell your pastor to re-read the manual. He should be used to hearing that since they're always after us to read the bible!:p

Please, I've owned a Prius since my son was born and he's fine

In all seriousness, don't believe the hype or read into something which does not exist. Go thru with the deal and enjoy the savings is my opinion.

And no, it's not my kid, just an arbitrary google image I figured would work here :p

Maybe this pastor should pray to his god and ask for guidance

In all seriousness, what is the purpose of your question? Is it to suggest that a Prius emits "radiation?" Is it to suggest that a Prius has dangerously high levels of "EMF?"

If your pastor has an implanted pacemaker, or any sort of implanted medical device such as an insulin pump, or an TENS unit used by MS patients, here is what this pastor should be aware of:

    1. Avoid a car with any "smart" key technology - many cars now offer this feature
    2. Avoid cell phones, BlackBerry's, BlueTooth devices, WiFi devices
    3. Avoid automatic doors as you would find at a grocery store or mall, as they may use a microwave sensor
    4. Avoid close proximity to induction stove tops and microwave ovens

As far as the "radiation" from a Prius, recent testing with very expensive RF/EMI testing equipment determined a Chevy Cobalt has far higher internal readings than a Prius. So perhaps the pastor should avoid the Chevy Cobalt as well

Some have claimed to use a gadget called the TriField meter to pick up not only "EMF" but also ghosts in a Prius. I have 2 decades experience with government entities performing EMI and RF compliance testing, and calibration testing, with professional scopes that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars

The crowd that buys a device that cost <$300 to claim to detect miniscule amounts of "radiation" perhaps need to ask their doctor about upping their dose of Seroquel

And if you're REALLY worried about exposing your kids to "radiation" make sure to confiscate their electronic gadgets, rip all the wiring out of the house, and perhaps move into a cave

Though I should warn you that caves are natural hotspots for radon, which actually is a radiation hazard

I think the purpose of the question was to determine if the car is safe for someone's children... I don't think it's an underlying message about Prius radiation causing havoc on individuals with pacemakers. Think about it. The pastor was willing to buy the Prius, was willing to read the manual, and is just concerned about his children.

The Prius, like almost all new cars, contains some radio devices. In the case of the Prius, it potentially has a Smart Key System and Bluetooth, both of which operate with low power radio transmitters.

Standard practice with all manufacturers is to warn people with medical devices to avoid all radio transmitters. Manufacturers are worried about liability, and as a result, they take the absolute safest approach and avoid all exposure. It is overkill, but that's not their problem. Their problem is avoiding lawsuits.

Unfortunately their advice doesn't work well in the real world, where we are constantly exposed to RF. If your pastor has a cell phone, or sits near someone with a cell phone, he has already exposed himself to more RF than you get inside the Prius.

Caves don't stop neutrinos or dark matter either and I read on a blog that those can cause "Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; memory loss; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; painful or prolonged erection; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent vision changes; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes."

Ohh wait, those are the side effects of Viagra. Well, whatever. You get the point. :p

To the OP. Just present your pastor with the facts and let him make his decision. Good luck to both of you. :)

I can't say for certain because I don't have the specific details in this case, but I'd bet the concern is not so much the strength of the RF field but rather the nature of the signal being transmitted. Digital transmissions can look, to pacemakers, enough like the signal produced by a properly operating heart that the pacemaker can miss a cardiac event and fail to fire when needed.

But that said, it's still probably paranoia since the SKS isn't transmitting most of the time and unless it is in a breast pocket when it is transmitting, it is probably far enough away from the pacemaker to not be a problem. (Refer to qbee42's comments regarding liability avoidance above...)

The motors et al. of the car aren't generating digital noise and thus should not be an issue for pacemaker wearers (hence the lack of warning about pacemaker wearers driving the car.)
