This is the EGR valve, and pipe connecting to intake manifold:

And this is the EGR cooler, connects to pipe weldment on the exhaust manifold:

    upload_2018-6-13_18-51-17.png

It's imperative to normal engine operation for exhaust gasses to flow through this system under certain conditions, and be cooled along the way. Over time the EGR circuit inexorably clogs up with carbon, probably to about 50% clogged by 120K miles?

The carbon build-up may be exacerbated by the oil/water/unidentified dumped into the intake manifold by the pcv valve. Time will tell; those with Oil Catch Can installed who later revisit the EGR will see what's happening. The OCC at the least cannot hurt.

Here's a couple of pdf about the EGR, one on the nuts-and-bolts, and the other I don't believe I've posted before, for monitoring EGR performance with Techstream.

Well, Ray, I was the idiot who bought it for that, so I'll take the loss. How much is it actually worth?

You can always just clean the one you've got. It's always the right part number, and the price is right...

Mendel, I'm going to - but I need to get at least some of the money back that I stupidly spent on the wrong parts - I certainly have no use for Prius C parts. Just throwing them away seems like such a waste.

I paid $100 for the Gen3 cooler and valve. If they were split, I believe the cooler they charged me $35 and the valve was $65.

But worth is what someone is willing to pay.

The price you paid was less than new at least.

    Good luck with the sale(y).

I meant, is engine bay cleaning on your pressure wash list also?

I’ll just keep it’s use to the egr cooler(y).

Thanks. I should be able to put the blue shop towel roll and orange goop that i left from the last meet up in your garage for the egr cleaning  Use them as you need, I got plenty here.

I found a place to move closer to work, the 2 hour commute will only be 2 months at the most.

Hope I'm in the correct section.
Doing intake cleaning, pcv valve replacement, OCC, EGR cooler/system cleaning.
So far pretty easy removing things. Just the HEAT is slowing progress. No garage, sun beating down with hi humidity, few clouds.
One question, should hose go from PCV valve to the INTAKE of the OCC? Then out the OCC to the LARGE fitting on the intake?
This "seems" correct, butttttt, better safe than sorry. Thanks

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

The routing path is from the PCV valve to the inlet of the catch can, through the outlet of the catch can then finally into the intake manifold ;).

How many miles on your Prius and any other info your willing to share?

    Keep us posted (y).

138,000 miles. I bought it last July with 116,000 miles on it. I'm the 2nd owner. It was in pretty good shape.
He did all the services at Toyota. All service recalls have been completed, at least that's what Toyota said.
I've change the CVTransmission fluid. It was VERY dark red, almost black. Changing was easy, getting it up
high enough to do it, Royal pain! My old time jacks wouldn't fit anywhere.
I did the EGR cooler (and related items) cleaning yesterday and put it back together today. Wasn't too bad to do.
Cooler was almost completely clogged with soot. Oven cleaner and gunk and water hose pressure cleaned it out
    pretty easily.
I also cleaned the intake manifold. Only a little oil at the bottom. Toyota had to order all the parts and the intake
manifold gasket won't be here until Thursday. It was ALL supposed to be here today. I had planned on ordering
the parts this week and do it next week, but this week opened up so I started it.
Dealing with the heat and humidity here is killing me. No garage or shade.
I average 47mpg. Depending on how I drive but believe my best has been 52?? Can't remember.
I have an OCC, but it won't fit next to the inverter like in the video's. The 2 inverter coolant lines are there.
I haven't figured out where it can put it so I can get at it to empty it. It's only 6 inches tall. Guess my Prius is different
than the videos I've seen of people installing them at the top! Or they have shorter cans!
So now it's sitting waiting for the intake manifold gasket to get here.

I’m with Ray don’t hose down your engine bay till it’s sqeeky clean. Pros use steam to limit the water.

Car wash hose will force water into many places It shouldn’t like the many many electronic connectors
    And the inverter.
You drive away with an engine miss or a check engine light comes on and you will regret it.
It accomplishes nothing except satisfying your ocd.

Not to mention it will instantly rust all the pot metal screws and bolts. If anything you should lubricate it like crazy. I like Pb Blaster CSP spray great product it’s thickesh spray grease with no smell.
It’s designed to stop corrosion. It’s called Corrosion Stop Preventer.
Under the hood spray the hood latch the hood hinges the throttle body return spring and anything you see under there that’s starting to corrode. Look closing you’ll see a lot. Like all hose clamps. I also spray every connector I can get too. Open them up and spray them.
Spray door hinges and the rubber bellows.
I spray the front and rear suspension too and spray Black Magic on the cv boots and the steering rack boots.
Keeps them from cracking. Lose a boot lose a cv joint.
Result is car that does not make a sound no squeaks no rattles.

In the last 11 years I have been on this site ive seen hundreds of cars rusted all to hell because the owners think squeaky clean is good. Squeaky clean engergizes rust. Who cares what it looks like under the hood. All you should care about is how well it gets you down the road.

I haven’t washed my engine bay on any car I have ever owned . They look like hell but there happy and no rust And no intermittent things going on. Need to work on something i hose it off with choke cleaner and underneath is shiny metal.

It’s not a car it’s a locomotive. It runs on lubrication.

Man I hear you. 2 weeks ago I worked outside for a few hours and didn’t realize how dehydrated I got i was pretty sick later that night. It’s brutal down here. The sun is painful. You can’t drink enough water.
Going to be brutal next month down here in Florida I’m in the Tampa area.

Long time ago I bought an patio umbrella and filled a Home Depot bucket full of concrete with a pipe the umbrella just slips onto that I wheel around on a handcart. The concrete bucket is heavy so the umbrella won’t blow away. I see my new neighbor bought this
10x10 pop up canopy. I looked around on amazon and harbor and found the cheapest one new 10x10 pop up canopy with storage bag for $55 free ship on eBay it goes over the car hood so you are out of the sun. I’m getting one this week. It has more coverage than my umbrella. You can’t work outside in the sun anymore if your not used to it.
Don’t know how roofers do it down here.
