The article clearly states income levels. But I hate to say it, if it weren't for the expensive cars, I don't think Tesla would last long enough get to the Model 3.

The point is not to look at it like some growing thing. It is just the aggregate of many individual decisions. If the best car available is an EV, (for whatever criteria each person has) they will buy one. "Get a horse" was once the height of humor. How fast was that transition?

The revised CA rebate program, It started on July 1 of 2015 CY, is income based. Even though it is income based, individual of $250k is a lot of money even in SF.

People that needs new car to commute and making less than $60k for a family should really try to get the Toyota Prius PiP or Chevy Volt 1 now. Major inventory discount, $4k CA rebate + Fed tax credit + (another $3k if living in the central valley) + ($3k for retiring an ICE).

Believe CA new incentive program doubles 2x for low incomes ($4000 total), and goes to zero for >$250k income

PS- The only incentive that I know of that is car co$t based is the new Washington State EV incentive limits rebates to cars $35k and under (Leafs for the most part).

Ok, so is the trick is to have a retired relative living in California be your straw-buyer?

You loan them purchase price for the vehicle with collateral being the vehicle. They get the rebate/credit and surrender the car for the balance of the loan? The rebate/credit is used for any sales overhead like taxes and registration.

A 'rebate/credit' and depreciation is a terrible thing to waste.

In the case of the Tesla and retired relative. Front them the rebate/credit and invite them to do a 'road trip' to deliver^h^h^h^h^h visit the relatives with the car. When the car arrives, close the loan and buy this 'used Tesla' with some sort of appropriate depreciation cost. After all, it is about 2,000 miles from LA to Huntsville, AL, add 600 miles if they stop in Stillwater OK and Coffeyville KS. Then with a straight face, take the title and receipt to the local vehicle registration office. . . . and fly the relative home.

Except the CA rebate requires that the buyer own/operate the car for 3 years. else return a prorated rebate...but I've never heard of it happening.

You know what this means right?

Tesla and Volt sales are going to tank.

A $4,000 rebate/credit for a $100k car looks more like a cheap tip. More of a 'thank you, and have a mint' or is it more substantial?
