I imagine most of you are tired of this saga....but just an update.

New cooktop has been in use about a month and it is working well. At least the house has not burnt down.

Just got an early Christmas gift of a couple thousand from my father-in-law. I wanted to spend it on Lotto tickets, but husband is opting for a 2,000-watt Honda inverter generator. Seems he hates the winter power outages we commonly have around here (1-2 weeks of no power at a time).

I said we could get an Generac for a couple of hundred less, but he seems to have a Honda fixation...

we just replaced our stove for 2k, so you are lucky to have it available for 'discretionary spending'.

I've owned both and both are good. Watts output is important. A hair dryer can suck down 1,500 watts to put it into perspective.

I'd go with the Honda. At the time of Sandy, a cubicle mate was looking into generators. The Generacs tended to have poorer user reviews. She was considering Honeywell, which was well reviewed, except for the more recent ones. Turns out Honeywell stopped making their own generators, and just rebadges Generacs now.

Even if they are of equal reliability, I bet the Honda will be more fuel efficient.

Lotto @41. Oh dear me no. Hubby is right this time.

Making me LOL at this hour is distracting to neighbors I am sure.

With respect and no insult intended, lotto is a tax on the mathematically challenged. Just do the arithmetic. The state takes in WAY WAY more than it pays out.

My mother-in-law has a Generac and has had no issues. I think she's had it about 5 years. But Honda makes very good small engines. My generator experience is mostly with larger diesels, but still not all that extensive.

My new 8 kW generator is a Briggs and Stratton. I couldn't justify the extra cost for a Honda and wanted the long term part availability of the B&S distribution system. It is interesting that my neighbor's 7.5 kW Generac generator is almost identical to mine so they seem to have been made in the same Chinese factory.

ps: my previous generator was manufactured in 1979 and was a two opposing cylinder, 16 HP B&S off brand monster. It finally died when I couldn't obtain replacement carbon brushes for the alternator. These new engines have less torque and rotating mass than my old monster, so I don't expect as long a service life. Then again it would be impressive if I lasted another 35 years.

Not a generator, but my irrigation pump was available with Briggs & Stratton, Honda, or a diesel. The B&G variant had slightly higher specs.
Since we have had good experiences with B&S and poor with Honda small engines, I had Amazon deliver the B&S variant.

Had 2 B&S lawnmowers (deceased) and currently a Honda. The Honda was the most expensive but similarly specc'd to the others, but starting with pull cord is much easier after the winter lay-up.
