An old, used car is always the most economical choice for those that can handle the maintenance issues that come up. There is a large part of the population that can't, or simply don't want to, deal with such issues though. For them, any savings in buying the car, will get eaten up paying a shop to do repairs.
The US smart fortwo is equipped with the largest engine they use, and an automated manual. None of the smaller engines, or even a manual transmission. The poor Canadians lost their little fuel sipper diesel when we got the smart. It is cheap though, if you don't want a factory radio. It's just that a Spark gives you the radio and a back seat for around the same price.

I don't remember the Fiat 500 being sold on economy, but more on style with the performance of Abrath. Still didn't get the smaller engines.

Let's overlook the iQ. We got it as a Scion loaded to the gills. It is just $255 less than the xD.

They are all 4 wheel cars though. They have components and materials, some required by stiffer safety regs, than a trike doesn't need and save coat by not having.

The new Mustang is designed to be more globally appealing with that engine in mind. So perhaps economical and fast.:sneaky:
