I don't normally use my e-brake, but when I tried to engage it the other day, I noticed that the red BRAKE light appeared on the dashboard only when the e-brake pedal was about halfway pushed down, and then turned off (was not lit up on the dash) when the pedal was pressed all the way down (meaning the brake should have been engaged). I got these same results after repeatedly engaging and disengaging the e-brake.

    Any thoughts on this?

As long as the brake works you should be fine. Just don't push the parking brake too hard. I recently had mine adjusted because it was too easy to depress and loose. I got it tightened and it works great now. The BRAKE light was never broken though.
