I went a little higher up the ladder with the Midland ER310. It does all I need it to do, and more. Hand crank and solar recharging. Large internal rechargeable lithium battery and space for AA battery backup. Nice bright light that blinks SOS if you need it. Doesn't do S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Messaging Encoding). It has an interesting feature, an electronic dog whistle, that you can enable if you're buried in earthquake rubble. Hope that never happens here in Arizona. I have another weather radio, a Reecom R-1630 that is S.A.M.E. programmed and picks up the messaging slack and also logs that all-important weekly test. I also have two Motorola (Radio Shack) FRS portable two-way radios with the NOAA weather alert feature. Cell phones are another source of an alert, but as mentioned above they are not very reliable. Regular AM/FM radio broadcasts are more reliable. Finally, since I am a weather guy, and retired now with lots of spare time on my hands, I have probably been watching the development of potential severe weather for a couple of days, and likely watching radar a couple hours before anything kicks up.
