I have a Prius 2010 which at 155k miles had an engine issue. The toyota dealer says that it need be replaced at 5500 K cost which includes new engine / labor charges. 1 yr warranty on the new engine.
    Any adv?
    thanks in advance

Have they told you any details as to what's failed on your current engine? If it's just head gasket, independent mechanics could take the head off, have a machine shop shop refurb it, and reassemble everything with Toyota's (very complete) gasket kit, for maybe $2500.

If the block has problems as well, piston/ring replacement, and perhaps a piston arm or two if bent, can be purchased: new piston ring set is around $100, and pistons are around $50 apiece. Guesstimate the piston arms are around $50 apiece, if needed.

Another option regarding block: a complete/new "short block" can be purchased for around $1800, basically everything from the head gasket down.

None of this is super cheap, but just food food for thought.
