Engine serial number, does it identify year built?

    I would like to know when my engine (not car) was manufactured. Bar code and number are readily found, so that's no problem. Is there a decoder for these serial numbers? Mine is a 2012. Thanks

    This helped me avoid a scam from a junkyard. I can't post a link because I'm a new member but:
    1. google search: "understanding prius engine numbers"
    2. the click on the link that has "proxyparts" in its name

    that will bring you to a helpful table
