    Need Help, what's your opinion?

    2012 Prius 94k miles

    Some details:
    - Bought it at 87k miles (almost 1 year ago)
    - Changed oil + filter around 88k
    - Changed air filter around 88k
    - Changed transmission oil at 92k
    - Drive it 20 miles to work everyday
    - took two +200 mile trips since I bought it
    - Did not charge battery with plugin, till recently (two months ago)

    Issue:
Car sound louder than usual, not sure if its bad. Started noticing the sound just recently.

Most recent stuff that maybe the cause:

    - two months ago I tried my plug-in charger for the first time, it messed up the computer
got the "check hybrid system ... " message and it was drive-able, but the normal mode engine wasn't coming on. I took it into the dealership and they reset the computer and it was running after that.

    - sometimes I stomp on the accelerator for fun, or floor it from a stop.

    - I always charge my battery now

    Video:
video of the sound of my motor while idling

When was the last time you checked the oil level?

Literally like 10 minutes ago, the oil was between the the dots.

Smelled SLIGHTLY like exhaust and is a little brownish / golden , but still see through.

Sounds a little 'tappity' to my ears.
I wonder if it's an EGR problem. It's getting near to the often recommended full EGR system clean at 100K miles and, perhaps here's your prompt to do that work before winter.
Easiest thing, is to take off only the EGR pipe for an initial look. If it's blocked up, it's more likely to be a reason for odd running and then a full clean is immediately required, Have done the pipe myself (got a vid on YouTube) but NutsAboutBolts has an excellent guide, here:

Not difficult, takes an hour or so.

I'd certainly say to keep the car in Eco until you fix her up. Though, I do agree that these 'slow cars' can be the fastest off the lights... for the first 30ft :)
We burn off the revving Camaro's and Mustang's with the unexpected fast sprint and, because it's childish.

agreed, time to clean the egr circuit before the head gasket blows, if it hasn't already

Mine is noisy like that as well. Been that way a while. I just did an oil change. Cleaned the EGR, intake and all that. Who knows?

i wonder if the plug in engine is different in any way. mine only has 20k, so i have no idea. definitely doesn't sound like that, but all prius engines sound bad in the warm up stage

Yes, once you know the car enough you will realize it is the root of all evil for this car.

I don’t think it’s different, but it probably lasts more miles in every way because the car drives in EV mode much more often.

My car sounds like that during warm up too, now it gets noisier because I've been taking my kid to day care I have to climb a long steep hill pushing to 40-45 mph, maybe revving to 3200-3500 rpm?

But taking your phone right up to the engine during warm up stage may exaggerate the noise a bit?(n)
