I had to add coolant to the reservoir and I forgot to replace the cup. and I drove for a few miles until the hybrid system was disabled. I assume the car lost coolant and overheated. I got the P261C code. Does that mean I damaged the water pump? Today I removed the water pump and it seems that I can turn the impeller with my hand easily. Is there a way I can test the pump by applying 12V and see if it turns? If so, anybody knows to which of the four leads inside the plug I should be applying voltage and the correct polarity?

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

I see from your profile you have a 2010, so this is in the wrong forum. I reported it for you so the Gen3 crowd will see it;).

    Some questions:
    • Any backstory to your tale?
    • How many miles on your Prius?
    • Have you checked the coolant level since the incident?
    • Do you have the pump out and if so, how freely does the pump spin?
    • Is there any binding resistance that causes it to stop rotating after a couple of revolutions?
I’ve preventatively replaced the water pump on our 2010 with 192 k miles at 173 k miles. When I pulled it, there was some resistance compared to the replacement pump going in.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

It is a 2010 with 200K miles. I had replaced the lost coolant but the problem persisted. I removed the pump and it does spin relatively easy. Just want to apply voltage to see if it spins. Also, what voltage should I be getting from the pins in the plug that plugs in it from the car?

i guess i'm surprised at the hybrid system shut down with an overheated engine.
