Very cool on the gen3 experiments; do you have a good feel for
how many amps you're stuffing into the system at any given time?
Any oddities in the car's displayed SOC or "regen cars" that
    stack up as you drive?

Just to update...my data logger hasn't arrived yet so I'm limited in what I can see at the moment.

I've made three runs over the past week to measure the equivalent e-miles of a full pack. I shut down the pack as soon as the red LED lights.

The first gave 11emi (but not sure the pack was fully charged), the second gave 13emi, and last night the third gave 18emi (out of 58.7 driven)....so the pack seems to be breaking in and wasting less charge on balancing.

I've got an integrating current-voltage-power meter coming as well, but the current from the DC/DC converter is limited to around 10A.

Otherwise, I've noticed no unusual behavior at all.

The case still needs to be modified or updated to fit under the deck of the GenIII so I'm running w/ it lashed to the deck for the time being.

    atfsi,

Thanks. I hope this works out for you. I am wondering what MPG increases we can expect from the Enginer Kit for people who drive the highway 90% of the time, but 18 miles of EV is very good for the price of the kit. Even if you live in California which makes the 4KW kit $4495.00.

    Thanks,

    Chan

I havn't taken it out for an expressway run yet...that should be interesting !

Remember it's 18 e-miles out of 58.7 miles...I wish I could run it as an EV full time.....

    A little more OT here....

This is a shot of the 48VDC to 120VAC converter I picked up on EBay. For using the Enginer pack as an emergency power source during power-outs....

Hey atfsi -- silly thought: you might want to pioneer the concept
of *not* permanently mounting the pack in the boot, but designing
a quick but secure removable setup ... so when you go on long
roadtrips without much opportunity to charge, you can just leave
the thing home. The main advantages of a PHEV are local...

The current GenII case is setup as easily demounted...it's the weight that's the problem......(easily esp since I added a quick disconnect.)

We'll see how the modified case works out.......

The optimum trip for this 4KWH pack looks to be ~ 60miles to get the 20 e-miles.......so far anyway......my daily commute is only 2 miles each way....

I just notice that Enginer.com is taking reservation of the PHEV system. They list the options of having 6 or 8 KiloWatts of battery. Wow that would be nice but heavy?

How is the testing coming a long?

So far, so good...still working on case mods to fit under the deck.

The computer interface came in today....decided on the medusa research MR-PA-60100R-B which is an integrating current sensor w/ USB interface and addl. inputs. ( see Medusa Research )

Here's an update on the interface...

Here it's installed and working. The shunt is in the negative line from the batteries to the breaker.

    atfsi,

Just ordered my kit from Jack on 10/20 under the trial program for the 2010 kit. Really excited now but was wondering if you are going to install a second DC to DC Converter? I hear that is the only way you will be able to drive in EV mode more.

    Hi Chan;

Not right away...I want to see how much e-power the system will deliver as-is first. I would like to see a more powerful converter in the future, but I want to see what characteristics it needs. Right now, if you drive ~ 60 miles/day, the existing converter w/ a 4KWH pack is just about right.

This morning, on my 2mi cold start commute...it took only 56 WH. So a block heater will be the next step (200WH would be nice)

Heard from J..they have the new case for the 2010 on the way..I'll be taking pics of that install when it gets here.

Great news for me then. My commute is about 66 miles round trip everyday. This should make out pretty good for me. As for me, a EBH is going to be my next immediate install. Jack just sent out my kit today. Was wondering the quick disconnect cord you made, can that be purchased at home depot???

Yes....or any good electrical outlet....a 220 volt 30 amp locking pair is what I used. The female side is toward the Prius and the male side toward the Engineer. (make sure the car and the pack breaker are OFF when connecting/disconnecting) A better arrangement might be a pair of Anderson connectors (like those used between the charger and the pack) since they have shielded connections in both directions...a bit safer. (I'm thinking of changing as soon as I get some more)

I have the EBH...havn't put it in yet....thinking of adding a battery heater as well for cold weather....a piece of "gutter" heater or something similar....

    Thanks atfsi,

I will look at gettingthe Anderson Connectors. For where you live the battery heater is not a bad idea. In So. Cal. the EBH is all I really need since the install is so simple. If this system works out I will be trying this install on my Hybird Altima but space is limited.

A set of Anderson SB50 (will carry up to 50 Amps DC) is a better choice and it's an standard for EV wiring disconnects, like
this ones and color ORANGE will be more appropriate for HV EV wiring

Also, if you do an small search in ebay, there is another auction for Anderson SB50 connectors with wires already attached.

Thanks mrbigh. Quick question.. How would I put the wire in the slugs? Do I just crimp the wires on??

Wires can be crimped or solder in or both, and the connecting lugs are for two types of wires gauges, you must select the thicker of the wires being 6 AWG or 6ga.

Do you have any more pictures on what this device does? What kind of data are you reading from it?

What mods did you have to do to the PCB specifically?

I'm actually interested in getting a device like this.

I am interested in the device also but Medusa Research is going out of business and I cannot seem to find one to buy online. I am very interested in the USB feature and how the software works??
