Oh, I like that idea. I'll look into it. Thanks.

That seems to me that the hatch would then be left slightly ajar -- not totally shut resting on the door gaskets and unlocked. If it is ajar (I live in the tropics) geckos, ants, wasps, maybe centipedes could make the car interior their new home and I'd have a mess when I got home.
But I'll check it out and see if my thinking is wrong. Thanks for the suggestion.

I see, you're planning to leave it that way for a while and come back.

I use the push-the-latch-down method, but generally I'm just going to grab a tool or something and come right back.

The duct-tape-over-the-latch-strike idea might be questionable too ... the hatch might be closed all the way at the moment you walk away, but it won't be latched, and a funny wind gust / curious raccoon / etc. might change things before you get back.

Tie a string to the inside release lever, leave it hanging out through the gasket somewhere?

That may be possible. I leave mine that way for sometimes a couple of days at a time with no such invasions, so far. It does not leave the hatch significantly (if any) farther ajar than the glove method, and is more reliable.

Yeah, the duct tape over the latch strike didn't work. Somehow it still locked.

Take the screws out of the latch catch. Put the catch into the latch in the latched position. Allow hatch to close.

Batteries, whether the hybrid pack or the 12V, age doubly fast when not used for an extended period of time.
I leave the car to someone I trust(who will enjoy the novelty of driving a hybrid) rather than let it sit for more than a few days.
