I will keep people updated. I have phone numbers and such I will pay once I get things taken care of and am satisfied. I will urge others to call in as well. It's just crazy that they think their stuff is good.

Making a viral impact would maybe cause them to reconsider their approach.

Maybe going to Redditt or something, it's not just Prius, is all of Toyota from what I am reading. Maybe if they get enough bad PR then they'll take it a little more seriously.

they value your data too much to give it away to another company. it would take a major drop in sales and clear knowledge that infotainment was the problem to get them to change. most people would rather have a cheap reliable car than the other way around.

kudos to honda for taking the high road.

I really wanted Apple CarPlay too. My understanding is that Toyota doesn’t like Apples t&cs around data usage and privacy and so won’t allow it in their cars.
I suspect that Apple charge a fee too but that is just me speculating.

    iPhone ?

I don't care. Google has all the data they can have. I got nothing to hide. I have Google integrated into nearly everything.

I doubt that's it anyways. After I purchased my car a got tons of crap mail with the same misspelling Toyota had, so I knew it was because of them.

Well, Toyota Connect = Toyota + Microsoft, if that is any consolation to anyone. Haven't been able to find out much about what they actually do yet, but maybe they're working on this. The nav is better than what I had before (which was none). I Google for locations and put the destination address into the system, guess I'm just backwards in that respect.

As has been mentioned, the customization features that are accessible through the head unit can also be accessed using Techstream. You can get a Mini-VCI cable and either pirate the Techstream software (note that Windows 10 major upgrades will reset the licensing, so hopefully you can find a keygen or permanent crack for a new enough version, otherwise you'll be begging for keys on shady Russian forums every 6 months), or buy time-limited licenses through Toyota's Technical Information System ($55 for 2 days, which also gives you access to all the service documentation).

However, the car certainly doesn't need access to those features to function, and in fact, in the Japanese market, most Priuses don't come with a radio (the exception being the PHV (Prime) with the 11.6" system) - you're expected to either buy an accessory radio from your dealer, or go to the aftermarket.

It is annoying that the GPS talks over everything and can't be muted. I get annoyed when she talks over NPR.

I didn't know that Japanese Prius didn't come with radios. I know you could get 2Gs with DVD players, I saw people watching movies from the driver's seat while parked.

I think that the issue is build or buy, to a certain extent. They've spent so much time and money on Entune, so it's a sunk cost, they've got all those people they'd have to redeploy/lay off, etc. It would be pretty hard to turn that steamship on a dime and change to Android Auto or whatever in n model years at this point, or license somebody else's tech and integrate it without significant rework. It would be easier for them to do an "acqui-hire" like Google's purchase of the Pixel group at HTC, but where would they get the people from, if that isn't what Toyota Connect is?

I believe the lack of radio standard in Japan is a Gen 3/4 thing - Gen 1/2 had things too tightly integrated, but Gen 3 moved vehicle status information into the instrument cluster, freeing up the radio area for Toyota's usual strategy of more generic radios.

I was speaking in regards to claims of not wanting others getting my data. I don't believe that premise nor am I that paranoid about privacy.

Android Auto could easily run along side the other apps on Entune. Or Carplay. Toyota just trusses to allow it. They don't have to change or scrap their system. It can be another enhancement.

Is TechStream used through the OBD?

If so, can an app like Torque access and change those settings?

Torque can't, but Carista can, as I understand.

Perhaps they could run parallel systems for a couple of years while they phase one out, but I don't see that happening. I'll keep trying to find out more about Toyota Connect. That site is spectacularly vague. I know they hire Android devs there, but it's a very small shop at this point.

I believe the 2018 Camry has the new Entune 3.0. I heard it may not be available as an update for older hardware. From what I have read, Toyota still has not "got the message" that users hate Entune.

Wasn't that what we were doing in the1940's and early fifties?

If you otherwise like the car I would do this.
