I would love to duplicate what you did ! my commute is just outside of my EV range which isusually 35 miles, combination of about 30 miles on congested but flat Hwy in Central Valley CA and 7 miles of city streets. Surprisingly, my wife who does not hypermile has once gotten 38 miles 100 % EV! She must have had a heck of tail wind is all I could think of...

Excellent approach although I would probably relocate to a trailer now that receiver hitches are becoming available.
Perhaps you might list the parts and specifications?

So I did this as a project with a goal to not use gas as much as possible. I knew I would spend more on it than many years of just burning gas. I spent a total of about $2000.

How are you ensuring that the Greensonic panels stays on while driving? Or, is't a setup you take off when you drive?

68 Fahrenheit is the magic temperature for hybrid pack with 75 where it affect chemistry inside....new chemistry they use now is much more better than first and second generation

Where is still to be seen how well they compare to NiCd battery...
With other Car maker that use Lithium they have good future...only it will be in BMS how well is engineering parameters set

Wow 280 lbs of extra battery. You might be able to advertise as a rolling emergency UPS for EVs. You could just about set up camp anywhere or at least have adequate true UPS for your house during power outages. Nice dual use.

I drive with them, no wind noise and no loss of mpg/drag. Used 3M vhb double sided tape. I had to take the one on the back window off once to get a wave out of it, it wasn't to bad to remove. Used nylon laceing cord and goo gone in a dental flossing motion.

Yea really don't need three 155ah each. I have ran just battery bank without solar, as a test for 5 hours pulling 900 watts/hr. That got the batteries down to around 50%.

And again Chris, merged. Please begin using multi quote.

So far it has only gotten up to 80 deg f, here in Sc.
So far so good. If and when the small single cell square panels are available, those would be great for a car or some type of solar paint!

I took a 14 mile r/t drive yesterday through rolling hills with CC set at 55 mph outside my neighborhood. Auto AC was on, set at 75F but it probably was working at a leisurely pace. Overall consumption was 4.9 miles per kWh. The drive was at 6000 - 7000 foot elevation.

I wanted to drain my EV power so have not charged for a couple days. Had 1% left and a mile from home. Tried my best to reach home but came up 2 blocks short and the gas came on. I guess I could have pushed the car for 2 blocks.

    Hey Chris,

Would you happen to have a copy or know where to find that electrical diagram? I'm looking into creating a setup similar to yours and would like some guidance on implementation.

    Thanks in advance!

I don't have the schematics. I think Toyota tech data for $10 a day is probably the only place to get it. If one was not worried about the warranty, it would be better to use either a DC/DC charger or send the solar controller power the the cars charger. At least that would eliminate the 12v battery bank. That is what I will do once the warranty expires.

I'm not worried about warranty, I figured if I need service, I would disconnect and pretend nothing happened ;) I'll try to find the schematics and go from there

Alright, I got the wiring diagrams for the Plug-In Hybrid System, Shift Control System, and Vehicle Proximity Notification System. The following link takes you to a 57 page pdf of the diagrams. Hopefully it has what we need to figure out where to plug in a solar panel system. I asked about the wiring diagrams for the Japanese version with the solar panels but was told that those would probably be inaccessible in the states.

Finally got some Cali weather this morning, 68°, and managed to get 35.1 EV miles, just .8 short of my 35.9 mile morning commute. Estimate at start was 30.8. I've been charting temp and mpg, only on my commute and the trend line is clear. Didn't start recording HV miles on the way home til I found the trip "c", which will record miles and mpg from power on to power off. Bummed I can only charge at home.

I hit a new EV record for me today, 88 miles. I started with 32.5 miles of EV range. I hypermiled behind semi's doing 60-65. But it was the 7000 ft of elevation drop that really helped. I was down to 55mpg at the summit, but almost made it to my destination on EV from there on 24 miles of EV range.

73 miles from the summit to Costco consumed 18 miles of EV range. This was where most of the 7000 ft elevation change occurred. The engine came on twice, for about 1/2 mile each time, while climbing during that part of the trip.

132 total miles today, 108.2 mpg today. 12.0 Ave miles/kWh with ac load of 2%. Air temp 50-55 F. Total elevation drop start to finish was 4000ft.

    4.2k total mi @ 72.9mpg.

    Hi all.

I have 2700 miles on my prime, picked it up on Feb 19th. My ev range was pretty consistently telling me that I had 26 miles after the charge was done. I drive 30 miles each way to work and charge to full twice a day. The car sat for a week while waiting for a new windshield (A rock and my windshield had a fight and the rock won! ) Now when I charge it, the system is consistently telling me that I have 23 miles of range after the charge. Anyone know if this is normal?

To top it off, after they re-calibrated the lane departure assist/collision warning camera, my adaptive cruise control has been acting like a nervous nelly, jamming on the brakes because the car NEXT to me is going 60 mph slower than I am!

Sorry about the windshield. Those EV miles seem low for Cali temps. Depends on your driving style, some in your area are getting in the 30's. In NJ temps now that it is over 50° I'm in the 30's. A heavy foot will lower EV miles. The windshield issue seems like it wasn't calibrated right. I would go back to the dealer.
PS. My windshield had a fight with a small rock today and the windshield won. Thank God.

It sounds like the new windshield is on crooked, that is why it sees the car in the next lane as in front of you. :)
But, no, it isn't normal to see your EV miles drop like that. The only sensible explanation is that they drained the battery without driving any miles so you have a very low miles EV trip in the computation. It is sort of like a moving average. So don't worry about it unless you are ACTUALLY getting fewer EV miles per charge. Otherwise wait a week or so and you'll see it slowly move back to normal for you.

I'm not sure where that fuelly info came from, I only have 3 fill-ups. Those aren't even my #'s! My avg is 128.8, my best mpg was 148.3!

I dropped it off at the dealer today and they couldn't figure it out. I have to bring it back tomorrow so they can try and figure it out again. They are friggin BOZO's on that bus! Hopefully 3rd times a charm and they get it fixed. on a positive note, I think that I drove 27 miles pure electric on the way home tonight and I wasn't able to get it fully charged prior to departure.
