    If you "can drop $500 here or there", then invest in the grid charger from HA. It will save you a lot of grief because you will be able to tackle the recondition process as a whole. Also buy a diagnostic tool like Mini VCI or a VXDIAG (as recommended by EdTheFox in post #11) so that you can monitor your HV battery in real time, as well as take before and after statistics to verify you made some improvement.
