Yep, that's one of the state that says no to oil catch can. We want your cars to break down asap so you can buy expensive cars much as possible. Engine life and value don't matta in CA.

Why are oil catch cans banned in some areas? What's the harm of them?

No harm, as long as you eat everything you catch.

Beginners like me who will botch the oil catch can mod can cause pollution from engine release into the air, so it's best nothing happens to an EGR path, that's what California politicians believe.

Interesting. In California, can you still pass smog if there is an oil catch can installed?

No, they do a visual inspection of the vehicle. Any aftermarket modifications found would be a failure to pass.

    If they look;).

My smog place is run by a Prius owner with a visible oil catch can:).

Depends on who you know like most things(y).

Wow..Minnesota doesn't even do inspections or emissions testing anymore...since 1999!

I'm torn on the value of it. On one hand it is theoretically good for the environment...but on the other hand it adds yet another cost to owning a vehicle ( either in taxes or direct fees ). Plus, cars are in general cleaner these days. However, I'd love it if more 'coal roller' trucks are caught!

With that said..I still haven't installed catch cans. I may just clean the EGR and intake more frequently, etc... As for catch cans, I think my Hyundai Sonata needs one more than the Prius does at this point. (y)

Pour point is irrelevant, and has not been in the "winter weight" J300 SAE specs for years, because it isn't a valid measure of usability at low temperatures. Better test procedures are in effect nowadays.

I would agree the engine is the same the oils are not, if you have ever had poor oil in or don't know the history of your used car flush it out. I have known a good flushing agent to free up rings and improve oil consumption.
