It was 12.8 cubic feet for the Mirai to 13.49 for the Yaris.

Either the hydrogen tanks take up a lot of space, or Toyota's poor packaging skills happened before the Prius Prime.

I wouldn't call it poor package - it's just that the tanks have to be large at that time.

Also it’s not like the Mirai does not have a trunk it is plenty capable to carry items for the average person.

I guess above average people would be getting a Yaris, given the choices.

probably wouldn't get one of those either. After all, the sedan is becoming more and more passe, giving way to pick up trucks and SUVs. That's why Toyota in it's foresight dumped the model C & model V Prius here in the US as well as some other markets. So if the sedan is so much less popular, who can imagine the drain on sales for a hydrogen car, that you can only drive around near it's handful of refill stations. At least Toyota's competitor had the good sense to slap their hydrogen system into an SUV.

The packaging bit was tongue in cheek.

The tanks will always be large. Getting around hydrogen's lousy energy density means compressing it to insane pressures. The gas tanks people see for things like scuba or welding are usually at less than a third of the pressure that hydrogen for FCEVs is filled to. That requires a lot of reinforcing material for the 33 gallon tanks needed to hold 5 kg of hydrogen.

Tanks for liquid hydrogen would be smaller, but using liquid introduces issues that make it less practical for personal cars.

The new Mirai's long hood is because that is where the tanks are.

Considering you can't take it of trips, yes. Then again, a group of four on a golf outing might have to share clubs.

Which has me wondering why it isn't doing any better in comparison to the Mirai in the US. It is number one globally, because of Korea's incentives.

Rear wheel drive? In my book, that's a BIG improvement. Heck, I'd also love a rear wheel drive Prius to appear in 2021 or 2022. I can dream.

There were roughly 30 - 35 2020 Nexos around us about 3 months ago. There's only 1 left in a 250 mi radius from our ZIP code as of last night.

Maybe it is shifting, or maybe Hyundai doesn't ship over all they could. They sell more at home, and the government there has fixed the price of hydrogen at a rate competitive with gasoline, along with whatever other incentives they have.

Ahh. Oh well. At least other readers can see the old layout.

Are you sure about tank placement in the new car (or are you being cheeky again?).
Page 2 shows the tanks in the middle and rear again (and much smaller than Gen 1).

I wonder how many kilos the Hindenburg carried at 14 PSI sea level.

Made a an error, the Mirai tanks can only hold 33 gallons. Fixed above.
I missed that scrolling through. My mind was occupied by the mystery of the folding passenger head rest.

Didn't realize the fuel cell was so massive. That front tank is at least partly responsible for the hood length and wheel base stretching. Still won't have fold rear seats though. I'm guessing that is the battery above the motor.

As with all things fuel cell, the targets for tanks missed DOE deadlines. Improvements should still be happening.

    17 to 18 thousand.

No way the mirai is way bigger for the front passengers

    mirai yaris Tesla model 3
    Passenger volume 85.7 85.9 97
    Front Headroom 38.5 38.2 40.3
    Front Legroom 42.5 41.9 42.7

That headroom is 0.3" taller than the yaris, and the legroom is 0.6" longer than the yaris. And the shoulder rom in the back with 2 people is 3.5" more than the yaris with 3 in the back and only 0.5" smaller than the model 3 with 3 in the back. Sure its more expensive to buy and has a smaller interior and trunk to the model 3, but the mirai is heavily subsidized in its 3 year lease ;-)

You might get by better with liquid with a large battery. That way the battery can recompress gased off hydrogen into anouther tank, and gassed hydrogen when sitting idle too long could be run through the fuel cell to charge the battery.

Metal hydride was what I learned was the needed technology though, and currently it is even more expensive than the carbon fiber hydrogen tanks and extra room they require.

Camry is #2 best seller for Toyota. BTW Toyota has 5 of the 25 spots for best sellers. Not one Tesla on that list.

    For most people, this is the one that matters;

So yea - great ... after you drop the cost down to $300,000, maybe over the next decade you knock production cost down to "only" eighty thousand, then sell it for $50,000?
    So much for sustainability.
Not to mention the expensive fueling, unless it to is unsustainably subsidized.
    (sigh)

Not one Lexus either, or any luxury brand for that matter.

The Model 3 sold 94,750. It came close to making the top 25.

Lexus's big sellers; the RX with 66,251, the NX with 35,929, and the ES with 29,784.
