& that is extremely too much $$$$$ for an oil change.

    < $40 w/filter for DIY oil changes. M1 0w-20 x 4 at $7-ish, and a $4 Purolator filter.

Tire rotation costs about 30 minutes of your time if DIY, and less than 1 hour even with primitive tools.

If you have a place to do this stuff, your first DIY would pay for the tools you'll need. By the second 5k mile tire rotation for sure.

Without knowing where the OP is we can't say that price is normal. It is very expensive, but they might live in an expensive place.

My 30k service at the dealer was only $60. I changed the ICE and Cabin air filter myself.

Very bad deal. My dealer said that after the free ones oil changes included with Toyota Care the cost would be $19.95.

Watch out. That wouldn't cover the dealers cost for synthetic oil plus filter if the labor were free. Either he misquoted the price of a Prius service or has some other scheme to make money off of you.

I didn't do DIY service on my C, but I do it on my camry which needs the same 0W20 oil. I get Mobil 1 0W20 in Walmart for less than $30 and original filter from Toyota dealership for less than $5. It takes less than 30 mins to get the job done.
Honestly speaking I hate oil change at the dealership. They don't really care about your car, and it just another car for them in the line. When I first change the oil on my own in my camry after 36K miles, since the basic warranty has expired (before 36K miles I was changing the oil at the dealership), I found out that the filter was totally over torqued and the oil in the sump was black as a crude oil. It seems that they were just draining the oil through the filter (with a special nipple which comes together with the filter, on camrys at least) and were not using the plug located on the sump.

I had my tranny oil changed at Luscious Garage, and they didn't pull this "you can't watch us work" BS. They let me under the lift, and the guy answered my questions as he worked.

That's absolutely the best if they can offer it. But I guess in most cases people don't have such priviledge.

I checked with the dealer and it is $19.95 and includes synthetic oil. This is after the free changes for two years or 25k. You could be right about other schemes but so far this dealer has been good as gold.

  18. If you can't do oil changes and tire rotations yourself, then you deserve to pay whatever they are charging.

The 0w-20 genre is no longer full sythetic. Don't know the price, and suspect it won't be long before it isn't even a semi-.

  20. That's the way it should be everywhere. The dealerships are afraid you might learn something, quoting liability issues is just a smokescreen.
