Why does Blizzard Pearl cost more than all other paint colors? Is it superior quality paint? There is Sea Glass "Pearl" and Black Cherry "Pearl" (yesss). What is it about Blizzard "Pearl"?

Additional clear coats to get that deep rich look. Also is much more durable.

Many automakers charge a premium for their tri-coat pearl white color. GM has White Diamond for $995. Ford has White Platinum for $595, $695 for Lincoln. However, unlike the consumer levels of the Prius, most models also have a shade of white that does not cost extra. Unlike blizzard pearl, I see a yellowish tint in many other pearl white colors, which I don't care for.

When I bought my Prius the sales person said it was because it was Lexus paint! So I bought red!

My Blizzard Pearl Prius Three is only a couple of months old, so I am eager to find out if it is durable. The pearl finish really pops and brings some character to what otherwise might be a dull and boring color-[IMG] I love it!

Because of the 3 Step Process during Painting at the Factory. Base Coat, Pearl w/ Metal Flake Coat, then Clear Coat. It doesn't seem any more durable to me. I have a few chips. It does look pretty good at night and in different daytime sun conditions.

The day after I brought mine home I was jacking it up to do some undercoating and the handle slipped out of the jack and struck one of my doors. It was a pretty hard glancing blow but to my surprise, it only pealed up the clear coat and left the color intact. Can't even tell unless you look in the light just right.
Even after four tough Alaska winters, the paint is really holding up well. Yes it chips fairly easy. But compared to our 11 Rolla in BR, that thing after two winters looks terrible.

So it sounds like the Black Cherry Pearl doesn't have a clear coat on top? ...and why not dammit! It would look even better I suppose. I hope it holds up. We have mild winters (if you can even call them that) but lots of hot sun. My ride lives in the garage...

All cars are clearcoated (though I've heard "Black" isn't but it might've been an old source. Can anyone confirm that?)

Blizzard Pearl is 3-coat paint as smokiejoe describes. This gives it a nice shimmer compared to Super White which is a flat white.

Toyota has always charged for their 3-coat whites - Diamond White Pearl, Arctic Frost Pearl and now Blizzard Pearl.

At least they don't charge extra for their metallic paint! (Toyota GB does).

It's extra for sparking flakes.. it does give the paint some depth vs the flatter looking white. I didn't realize till after purchase that this wasn't offered till 2012. Then I realized that's why the pre-2012 whites looked different.. doh!

    is this from Wiki wrong?
    "
    2011 facelift

Facelifted Prius third generation exhibited at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

In mid 2011 (for the 2012 model year), the third-generation Prius Liftback received modest style and equipment changes. The exterior changes include updated headlamps, revised tail lamps, plus a distinctive front fascia and bumper, and the deletion of the "Super White" color option in the United States. Prospective American Prius buyers wanting a white exterior must either choose the "Blizzard Pearl" color (a glittery off-white) for an additional $220, or choose another make or model. "

Ah no, but BP was (obviously) available in 2010+. "Super White" was deleted as an option for 2012MY as indicated.

Right. I think the SW was available for fleet model I me thinks. Perhaps others might know that.

Yeah Super White wasn't available to the public for 2010/2011; you only had BP as the sole white colour option.

It must be the lighting, viewing angle or maybe just plain dirty as to why I thought they were not BP.
