Most reviews I've seen say that the extra 4 1/2 inches of length between the P.Prime and the regular Prius are all in the rear of the car for the battery. From looking at lots of pictures, it's not really clear where the extra length really is.

If anything, it looks like the nose is longer…

Is it for sure really an extended rear, because of the battery?

I was hoping for a superposition, but no one seems to have done that.

Still not super-obvious to me. I'll try again to post this picture from the KBB YouTube review (wouldn't let me earlier).

Hmmm, still can't seem to post it; it says it's not a photograph...

I tried, but the perspective is off just enough that I can't match them up.

It's about 1" longer in the front and 3" longer in the rear IIRC.

Look at the bumper. These are the two closest photos I can find on the internet. The Prime is on the top and the Gen 4 is on the bottom. The Prime has that extra subtle lip to show the extra length. Even visually, you can tell that the top of the rear bumper is wider on the Prime than on the Gen 4.

Here's a side-by-side that I made from the photos on the Toyota website.

Here is a superposition. The little bit of "Blue Magnetism" that you see sticking out in the front and rear is the Prime.

Kinda interesting that they'd add 3ish inches way down low in the rear, considering that the battery is up a bit higher than that.

I guess the concept is that down low is as good a place as any for a crumple zone behind the battery in case you get rear-ended.

The extra rear length is likely more for the carbon fiber hatch than the battery.

Made of the carbon-fiber hatch. I expect its purpose is just crumple-zone space, though.

The hatch's rear wall is thicker than the metal one. I don't see it being a major crumple zone piece.

3 inches worth at least, it would appear... not huge, but not insignificant.

As I recall, carbon fiber as used in Indy cars has excellent energy-absorption characters.

Yes, by shattering into tiny little pieces.
If the hatch stays latched closed during an impact, it will absorb some of the energy. The heavy lifting for that is being done by the bumper, quarter panels and all that sub frame. Which are likely high strength steel.

That hatch door is really thick. If it were steel you wouldn't be able to lift it.

Also there is the tiny storage slot behind the battery that goes all the way across.
Looks like they went to a lot of trouble for that tiny slot, and it adds inches.
