I'm more on Chris' side, at least for food items. Stock up on things that can be rotated through as normal consumption. Low wastage, and keeps the stockpile comparatively fresh.

I mentioned this movie several years ago in another thread. Maybe I should watch it again...

it deals with Los Angeles and thermonuclear war. It was a bit of a cult hit when I was in college, along with the Last Waltz ( Last Waltz is of totally different subject matter).
    From Wikipedia:
Michael Atkinson, the film critic for The Village Voice, liked the film and wrote in 2005, "This forgotten, saber-toothed 1962 AIP cheapie might be the most expressive on-the-ground nightmare of the Cold War era, providing a template not only for countless social-breakdown genre flicks (most particularly, Michael Haneke's Time of the Wolf) but also for authentic crisis—shades of New Orleans haunt its DVD margins...the movie is nevertheless an anxious, detail-rich essay on moral collapse."[5]

You can watch it here on Daily Motion, which I have never had an issue with, but some people don't like the site...

Neat! I gotta see that just for the Old L.A.

Our generator is an old hand-me-down which can (just barely) run the well pump, oil burner (water heater) and bathroom lighting at the same time. Hot showers for the win!

    +1

    Thanks for the reminder.
I need to lay in some Propane for mine when prices drop out in a few weeks.
I think I’m good for gas since folks in hurricane country are accustomed to having an extra jug or two laying around.
Same with water and cans (food.)
Since I’m a near-vegan legumes are a big part of my life anyway, and I also keep things like fruit and veggie chili in my office cabinet for tin-bagging when necessary. I also prefer the taste of bottled water over water filtered through ancient pipes so I keep my office water supply topped off.
My office also has a 125Kw generator and enough A/C capacity to make a global warming activist despair...

The CDC’s recommendation for keeping a little extra water, food, meds, cash, etc is ‘ops normal’ for the ETC(SS) house.

I sort of prefer to try to keep quality stuff around that can be used for normal daily stuff and have it both for everyday use as well as if an emergency.

For example, I have a top quality Stihl chainsaw. If I was just getting a saw for the very rare around the house job, I would have gotten a cheapo Poulan or something. But, if I need it "when the world comes to the end, and my wellbeing depends on it, I want quality all the way.

Half the eastern USA invests in milk sandwiches every time there's a snowstorm in the forecast. Sometimes these things take hold.

Those masks, the N95 ones, are said to be good for 4 hours max. Then throw away. I heard some authority saying you'd need thousands to get you through the flu season.

K&R Filter using non-mineral oil and a CPAP mask with a one-way valve on the exhaust. Of course some of us like the smell of mineral oil.
