Well usually the DMV charges some rate for registering your car and then you can get the standard plates. Then if you pay something usually less than $25USD, you can get one of maybe 10-50 different specialty plates. Some can be good causes. Around here there is a breast cancer one where that $25 goes to a cancer foundation. Then there are others like my plates I had to show proof of donating money to a renewable energy foundation, as well as pay $25 extra to get mine.

There has been some fuss in states like Indiana (I think) where one of their specialty plates is "In God We Trust", and the DMV does not charge extra for that plate. So basically stomping on the whole separation of church and state thing, but of course being America where anyone can practice whatever religion they want as long as it is under the same god few people care. I think there was even a lawsuit, but I doubt anything came of it...

    FFIW, Idaho may have recently changed it's license plate motto to;

    Great Potatoes. Tasty Destinations

But I can't find an official confirmation :noidea:

    Just for fun:

The rare vintage 1928 large potatoe license plate:

license plate mottos. (Listed past to present)

I'm not mocking the State. I've never been and until today I never knew where it was or what it produced.

I was laughing at the licence plate though as "Famous Potatoes" is still an odd advertisement for the State and an odd thing to see over here in the UK. I'm sure the potatoes are the best in the world, but surely there's a better State slogan?

Or perhaps as one of the previous posters have said, some billionaire potato magnet somewhere has big influence.

Well thats pretty much all Idaho is famous for, its one of those places you really have to want to go to for anything else, so it fits the state. You could get England to put one on their plates, how about "We Like Queens".

just some clarification....that plate is free, but it's not the only standard plate. you can get a regular blue indiana plate for free that doesn't mention God at all. But the fact is the slogan is on all of our money, and we don't have to pay extra for our money to get that slogan.

    Here's the regular plate:

Here's what I put on my Jeep. The group fee of $25 is a donation to the Indiana Heritage Trust. This trust fund was established to secure more lands for conservation, recreation and preservation purposes.:

Here's what I put on the Prius. I pay $20 extra which goes to the Military Family Relief Fund through the Indiana Veterans' Affairs.

An Idaho almost-native, I didn't learn of these survivalists and militias until after I left, and one of them got into a major firefight with the FBI over here in Western Washington. See [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Jay_Mathews"]Robert Mathews[/ame].

The national publicity that Idaho was 'home' to these nutcases then caused a large number of them around the country to pack up and move to Idaho.

Thanks a lot, national press, for your self fulfilling prophesy.

They truly do have great potatoes. Potatoes are great so why not boast that you have the greatest of the great?

I live in "Vacationland". People have been known to alter their plates to say "Taxationland".
