It's the fan in the front of the engine compartment.

The problem noise is intermittent but it typically occurs when I drive relatively hard in EV. I took it to the dealer and, of course, they couldn't reproduce the problem but had a good suggestion - video tape it when it occurs. So, when I arrive home earlier this week it was really howling with no ICE running. I was able to video it and plan to get it to the dealer on Friday or Sat. It doesn't appear to be the main fan. I'll check back when I find out more.

Maybe he got sidetracked trying to figure out how to turn off the pedestrian noise maker and the reverse beeping.

I have fan noise coming from the engine compartment near the front left quadrant of the engine compartment. I have noticed it twice now and both times it occurred when I had the heater set to warm up the interior of the vehicle
One time it was plugged in and the second time it was running on its own and I can't remember what mode it was in if it was in EV or HV.
One of the salesman once told me that these Prius Prime's have actual heat pumps in them instead of just air conditioners
I'm not sure if that's true or not but I do know that heat pumps for residential homes can make horrendous noises when the pumps are running. I have an appointment at the dealer to look. I think on the 16th of March so I'll try to report back

yes, it is true. there's a residential heat pump near us, sounds like the loudest buzzer i've ever heard.

Our premium does this when preheating as well, nice and loud in the garage. I just assume it is normal behavior from the heat pump. Look forward to your dealer confirmation.

Hmmm... I don't have much real-world experience with heat pumps (Austin heating needs are pretty light). Conceptually speaking though, a heat pump is an air conditioner that cools the outdoors, so right off the top of my head, I can immediately think why it would be much louder than an air conditioner...
