Was on the roof of our car last night, seemed to just drop on, as the garage door was closing. Maybe fell off the door? About the size of my first thumb joint. I managed to coax him onto a piece of paper, get him back outside into nature.

as long as it isn't an asian longhorned beetle, you're okay.

You had me wondering: did I just release an invasive species? Still not sure what it was, but it did not look pictures of the asian longhorn.

The bushy feelers are different, and my bug has back markings kinda like a watermelon, not speckles.

If Asian longhorned beetles are found west of Illinois, I am sure USDA would like to know about it. They (and fungi they haul around) kill lots of trees.

Boy beetle found here is a native, not all that impressive, root feeder (in its youth). Like most scarab beetles, its role in food web is to transfer root material to any number of ants awaiting. Might rarely kill a plant. Herbivores are more like a bearable tax on ecosystems.

Feathery antennae on whatever insect, usually denote males. Ladysniffers.
