Motoring New Zealand: Long-Term Prius Plug-in Hybrid Test
New Zealand does not officially import the Prius PHV (either generation) but it does import used Japanese-spec cars and brings them up to NZ specifications (like replacing the Japanese head unit with a local NZ one).

Though Tesla is years ahead of VW’s plans for electrification, and the Silicon Valley automaker plans to be producing 500,000 cars a year by the end of next year, and perhaps one million by 2020, VW believes it will win. Volkswagen brand boss, Herbert Diess, said at a recent press conference: "Anything Tesla can do, we can surpass."

Possible uptick in new car mileage
I'm a little squeamish about posting what could be normal, statistical variation. But the chart also relates to the tapering down of Prius hatch back sales in September 2013: Average Fuel Economy On the Rise Again

Data compiled by University of Michigan’s Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle show the average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in April 2017 was its highest all year, after January and February reported 25.1 mpg and March had 25.2 mpg. The 25.3-mpg figure also matches the highest its been since August 2014, when it was 25.5 mpg.
The more interesting phenomena is the plateau that started the middle of 2014. In effect, buyers were no longer selecting fuel efficient cars to the same degree. There were many reports suggesting SUVs and pickups had became much more... -

Ohio’s Workhorse Group thinks it has the perfect light-duty truck for those criteria: the Workhorse W-15 4WD Plug-In Electric Work Truck.
Workhorse isn’t the first company to attempt to put an electric pickup on the road, but it is the first to build one from the ground up rather than convert an existing truck. Phoenix Motorcars has been converting Ford E-Series vans to electric drivetrains for years and attempted, briefly, to do the same to a SsangYong pickup imported from South Korea. Via Motors has been converting Chevrolet Silverados and Express vans into plug-in hybrids for a few years now, but both graft electric motors onto the existing powertrain.

This update is about the ADAC keyless security tests and the solutions how to protect your car.
A year ago (2016) the German automotive organisation ADAC tested 24 different vehicles with keyless technology from 19 different manufacturers (all positive, incl. RAV4).

RAV-4 Hybrid

The 2017 RAV4 Hybrid combines the power from a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine and a small high-torque electric motor through its transaxle. The software does some essential work but the RAV4 Hybrid delivers combined 194 system horsepower and Toyota maintains the RAV4 Hybrid can jump from zero to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds.
Of course, the RAV4 hybrid needs some extra power to carry around the electric motors battery pack, but the extra weight is put to good use in the vehicles driving dynamics. Toyota also has bolstered the RAV4 Hybrid’s suspension and regenerative braking pack for some additional stopping power, which is welcome because over the years, I’ve found Toyota brakes feel somewhat soft but that’s not the case with this vehicle.

Almost comical ... it wasn't too many months CR said how great Tesla was ... only to just a few months after that ... revoke their blessing and say their cars are 'no bueno'. Now? CR is trying to make sense of it all, so they don't seem to be so out of touch. But owners love for their rides flies in the face of all the bad pr that CR would try to shovel.
It must drive CR nuts ... blasting Tesla quality issues, yet the nutty owners love their rides anyway.
From the chart, Porsche is sort of in the same boat ... quality doesn't match up with CR's claim of "unreliable"

California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed into law SB1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The bill will raise $52.4 billion over the next decade through an increase in fuel taxes and vehicle fees—including on zero emission vehicles (ZEVs)—to fix roads, freeways and bridges in communities across California and put more dollars toward transit and safety.
The package is funded in the following ways:
- $7.3 billion by increasing diesel excise tax 20 cents (currently $0.13) on 1 November 2017.
- $3.5 billion by increasing diesel sales tax to 5.75% on 1 November 2017.

The bad news is that EVs are marginally viable because of their high cost and short range. However, progress is being made on these limitations in light of new vehicles from General Motors (Chevy Bolt), Tesla (Models S and 3), and others. Range is still limited to 100 to 200 miles or so, and battery-charging time is excessive. Electric vehicles (EVs) face stiff competition from traditional internal-combustion vehicles with the low gasoline prices, and the broad network of gas stations that can pump fuel into vehicles in minutes compared to the few hours of charging required to achieve a full charge in an electric vehicle.
