EV Batts
"There is now concern in the auto manufacturer world that there will be a shortage of electric car batteries as demand takes off, Automotive News Europe (Gibbs, January 2, 2017) reports. Just a year ago, Volkswagen had decided that batteries were over-supplied. Now, they are scrambling for batteries as they gear up to sell more electric cars. Those who follow the auto industry point out that a year ago, Volkswagen was building “clean” diesel cars instead of electric, but since the diesel emissions reporting scandal, Volkswagen is now depending on electric cars to fill its clean car requirements. But Volkswagen is not alone. Most European car makers are ramping up production of electric cars. Tesla does not plan to worry about battery shortages. It has... -

Reports of Prius death have been greatly exaggerated
Source: http://wardsauto.com/industry/toyota-down-sales-prius-upside-rav4-hybrid
DETROIT – Toyota is calling for 75,000 sales of its Prius liftback variant in 2017, 23,866 fewer than it sold in 2016.
The reason? Weak market demand for hybrid cars.
“We’re going to follow the market, but we think we have the supply-and-demand (equation) pretty much dialed in,” Bob Carter, senior vice president-automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. tells WardsAuto in an interview here.
. . .
Toyota sold 98,866 Prius liftbacks last year in the U.S., down 12.9%. The 5-year-old Prius V wagon and Prius C compact hatchback fell 47.4% and 46.7%, respectively, to 14,840 and 20,452, while sales of the Prius plug-in hybrid were down 40.8% to 2,474.

Plug-in sales growth
First be careful as percentages can be misleading: AD #2028 – BMW Hurting for SUVs, Tesla Cleared in Autopilot Investigation, 2017 Auto Industry Outlook – Autoline Daily
EV’S, PLUG-INS GROW THE FASTEST
Amazingly, despite cheap gasoline prices all last year, the hottest segment in the U.S. market was for electric cars and plug-ins. That segment grew 30% and over 150,000 were sold, with 70,000 being plug-ins and 80,000 electric. Plug-in sales grew the most, largely thanks to some new entrants and by strong growth from the Chevy Volt, the Ford Fusion Energi and BMW X5e. Most EVs are only sold in a limited number of states. They’re not available nationwide. So there’s a lot of upside potential. But before you get too excited they still represent less than 0.8% of the total market.
The problem with percentages and small quantities is it can give the impression of greater growth...bwilson4web Jan 23, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,765 Likes: 2 Replies: 18 -

EV road tax fees
Source: Yearly “EV fees” to replace lost gas tax revenue are less reasonable than they seem; Indiana the latest to scapegoat EVs | Electrek
Indiana recently became the latest state to suggest the idea of an “EV tax.” As we’ve covered before, several states have implemented additional yearly fees for electric vehicles. Even California floated the idea at one point.
At first glance, it seems almost reasonable – revenue from gas taxes is falling because cars across the board are using less (or no) gas; infrastructure spending is sorely needed but is only getting more costly thus squeezing budgets even more; more efficient cars,...bwilson4web Jan 19, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 4,618 Likes: 1 Replies: 46 -
