Based on SUV owners typically travelling 9,000 miles per year, and average 2016 fuel prices: petrol 109.2p/litre, diesel 109.7p/litre. A. RAV4 Diesel Active, 2WD, B, RAV4 Hybrid Business Edition Plus, 2WD.
Our tests show that the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid uses so much fuel compared with the diesel RAV4 we tested, it wipes out all potential savings from the hybrid's lower car tax (VED) with its bigger fuel bills.

Total Sold: 384,417
California: 98,763
% in CA: 25.7%
PHEV 2016
Total Sold: 72,935
California: 33,226
% in CA: 45.6%
BEV 2016
Total Sold: 84,246
California: 40,347
% in CA: 47.9%
Note: CA is about 11% of US population, so anything over 11% in CA is a higher concentration there
So these are interesting numbers, but showing some greater penetration of Hybrid and PHEV sales outside of CA. At one point, CA was up to 30% of hybrids, I thought maybe headed for 35% in CA, and 65% of PHEV were in CA at one point. BEV has... -
41 MPG from a Ford Fiesta or Focus 1.0
If the "clean diesel" is not for you, there's always the option of a Ford with 1.0 liter gasoline engine:
About $16,000 for the Fiesta 1.0
- And $18,000 for the Focus 1.0 with hybrid-style stop/start system

“[We] think we should be working to promote the longevity of the internal combustion engine,” Chet Thompson, president of American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), said during his presentation this week.
Both groups feel that the electric-car industry is getting too much support, relative to what they receive. Thompson used the word “inequities.”

Using a hybrid system directly related to the 918, Porsche’s green luxury sedan delivers a total of 462 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque from a 100-kW electric motor backing a turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 gas engine. The V6 is responsible for 330 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque, while the electric motor contributes 136 hp and 295 lb-ft; the result is sprints from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. U.S. fuel-economy ratings aren’t in yet, but the Panamera E-Hybrid gets the equivalent of 96 mpg on the Euro cycle when its EV capabilities are factored in.

Buying a Used "Smart" Car may not be a Smart Idea
Here is another data security issue that can have real world consequences.
Why buying used cars could put your safety at risk
I wonder if this can affect users who buy a used Prime. What about cars that have been test driven before purchase? Somebody could test drive & tie the car to their phone. The subsequent purchaser would be none the wiser until the initial test driver took over the vehicle.
I guess this is something else for dealers to check before finalizing a new or used car purchase. -
Delinquent Car Loans Reach All-Time Highs
The rate and amount of delinquent auto loans has climbed to its highest level since the end of 2008 when the U.S. was teetering on the edge of tbe Great Recession.
Car loans delinquent by 30 days or more grew to $23.27 billion, the most since $23.46 billion in the third quarter of 2008. They were up from $22.98 billion in the prior quarter. Roughly 3.8% of the loans were delinquent at the end of the fourth quarter, which is up from 3.6% at the end of the third quarter, according to data on consumer debt collected by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Why Toyota Only Sold One Prius in China Last December
There's a Bloomberg article making the rounds right now (and an Ars Technica article citing it), in which Bloomberg noticed that Prius sales fell off of a cliff in China, and only ONE UNIT sold in December!
They go on to speculate that it's because of the new Prius's styling, and the fact that Prius production ended in China in 2015, so any new Priuses are subject to high import taxes. They even compare Chinese-market Prius pricing to that of the Audi Q3, as an example of those high import taxes.
There's only one problem.
The Gen 4 Prius isn't sold in China, at least per Toyota's Chinese-market website. The production that stopped in China was aligned with the Gen 3's discontinuation (in Japan, Toyota changed over to the Gen 4 in December 2015). And, the Chinese market pricing is of the Gen 3, which isn't subject to the import taxes.
