Vt and MA pass break window's to release animal laws
So, VT and Ma have passed laws making it legal to break the windows of any car containing an animal in danger, well, we now have two prii in the driveway so that summers we can travel with the dogs, the prii are great, just leave them on with the air conditioning running and the dogs are safe and comfortable, but now some wingnut is going to be a problem sooner than later, I'm suggesting priuschat offer window stickers for sale that are rather professional looking and state that the animals are safe, and the car is running, "don't harm the car" -
Used electric cars sell quickly even as new sales remain flat
Interesting that there's a good secondary market for used plug-in vehicles. Though the article mentions a lot of it is in California due to the HOV sticker, folks from other parts of the country are also finding out for the first time that plug-ins aren't so weird and scary.
I know I kind of balked initially at buying a Chevy Volt new. But used, they're in the econocar territory ($14-18k), and for the most part drive much better than said econocars.
So while the high depreciation is screwing over the first owner, like any other car essentially, it's great for the second owner who can get a mostly gently used one for a fraction of the cost while they were new.

Misleading Headline
Hybrid and electric cars were the rage when gas prices where high. The grandfather of the category has been the Toyota (NYSE: TM) which recently fell on very hard times. Sales of the hybrid were off 26.7% to 11,027 in June and 25.2% to 67,405 for the first six months. Incentives on the Pruis have dropped to .9% for 72 months.
The Prius first came off the production line in 1997. Toyota has sold 3.7 million worldwide since then. Recently sales have been challenged by an army of other hybrids and the new found attraction of all electric cars like the Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model 3 which will be priced at $35,000 before government incentives, that could be several thousands of dollars more. That will bring the car to about the same price level as a well-outfitted Prius. Granted, the Tesla will not be available until 2017, but the company has several hundred thousands of orders.
Virtually every large global manufacturer has one or more hybrid models. This was not the case when the...charlesinoc Jul 4, 2016 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 4,400 Likes: 0 Replies: 43 -

Tightening Rules in Zero-Emission
Source: Automakers Face Tightening Rules in Zero-Emission Vehicle Mandate
Under California’s ZEV rule, automakers have been able to earn partial credits from sales of hybrids (including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles) and low-emissions conventional vehicles toward their ZEV quotas. But the regulations are slated to tighten in 2018 in a way that limits the impact of those partial credits and requires more sales of actual ZEVs, or battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
So it looks like there will be a 'come to Jesus' meeting in 2018. I'm impressed with the progress in battery technology. In effect, they are becoming more practical. However, the fool-cell has yet to show a similar breakthrough until hydrogen reformulation from other hydrogen carriers shows up in the cars.

Should I consider a Corolla (Auris) Hybrid instead
3 months after Prius Gen4 was released in Australia, there are still almost none in dealerships - none have appeared in my city, I think there is 1 across the other side of the next city (1 hr away), 2 more 2 hrs away.
I spoke with a salesman at a reasonably close dealership I hadn't contacted before today - he said he didn't think they'd be stocking any, they'll order them in if taxi owners want them, but he didn't think they were targeted at private buyers. Hmmm, I'm not sure if that was his opinion or the boss, but I crossed them off my list.
BUT - just this week, the Corolla Hybrid was released, and a few examples have arrived in dealerships already. It looks like it is a Gen3 dressed up in Corolla clothes. It is reasonably well equipped, but there is no autonomous cruise or lane assist, blind-spot etc like on our Prius. It appears a little smaller, and has a temporary spare tyre. It is about $7000 cheaper than Prius. It is roughly about the same price as... -
Leaf vs Prius
Source: Nissan Leaf electric vs Toyota Prius hybrid: which is lower on cost, emissions?
Sometimes, when tucking in for the evening, you can't help but wonder: did I really make the right choice? Could I have done better? Even now, could I still do better?
This is the question I ask myself, each evening, when I park my 2015 Nissan Leaf in the garage next to my wife’s 2006 Toyota Prius.
Given that both vehicles are now driven daily into Boston from the suburbs, a direct comparison seems inescapable.
. . .
As I silently drive away . . .

Ontario makes solo HOV driving a PERMANENT perk for plug-in drivers!
Well, some good news for my fellow Ontarians, particularly those in the Toronto area...
Not sure how they would regulate 'permanent'? At some point (likely far in the future) BEV/PHEVs will be far more common and they will need to repeal this. I can only imagine they will stop providing green plates and grandfather it in over time.
In any case, it is great news nonetheless. -
