Toyota BEVs
Source: Toyota/Lexus Introduce Three New BEVs In China
New all-electric models will be equipped with a 54.3 kWh battery.
According to the latest news, this month Toyota and Lexus will introduce three all-electric cars in China:
Lexus UX 300e
Toyota C-HR BEV
Toyota IZOA BEV
. . .
Both models are simply electric versions of the C-HR/IZOA compact crossover/SUV, built on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. Equipped with a 54.3 kWh battery, each should be good for about 400 km (250 miles) of NEDC range, but in the real world, we do not expect more than 300 km (186 miles).
. . .
The Tesla, 2020 Standard Range Plus Model 3 has an EPA range of 250 miles (286 mi NEDC) on a 50 kWh (55 kWh total) battery. I've driven 206 miles from Huntsville to Memphis regularly with a 30 mile reserve in our 2019 Std Rng Plus Model 3, 240 mile EPA range.

In COVID-19 crisis, electric auto startups race to stay on track
COVID-19 has hit the U.S. auto industry hard, but the most precarious companies might be the handful of electric auto startups on the cusp of key vehicle launches.
Rivian, Lordstown Motors, Lucid, Bollinger Motors, Faraday Future, and Fisker are leading a historic wave of startups that, inspired by the success of Silicon Valley’s Tesla, see a new future of battery-powered sedans and trucks. But with their first products in the pipeline, the coronavirus threatens the capital flows and customer base they need to survive.

Mileage calculator chart
I found an interesting mileage calculator the other day on the Ecomodder.com website.
Aerodynamic & rolling resistance, power & MPG calculator - EcoModder.com
You enter a number of parameters that apply to your car and it calculates a table of mileages and other parameters based on different vehicle speeds.
I have obtained the parameters for my Prius V and they are:
Total Weight 3340 for the car + me 205 = 3545
Cd = .29
Rolling resistance = (this varies with tires and driveline losses from .008 to .15) I used .011
Engine efficiency = 41%
Temperature = 68 deg
Frontal area = 23 ft cu
I calculated the frontal area from sketchandcalc.com website app.
You take a picture of your vehicle, import it into this app. You use a pen tool to draw the outline to form a closed irregular shape. I included in the picture a pizza box that was 10.5" square which was also in the frame with the car to calibrate the scaling...Ronald Doles Apr 12, 2020 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,887 Likes: 2 Replies: 11 -

Current news about Tesla Model Y teardown
While waiting for the 'all clear', I've been watching the Munro Associates teardown of the Tesla Model Y. He bought one and is taking it apart with commentary about the quality of build down to the frame and eventually battery pack and motors.

CAUTION: A lot of 'traditional' car reviewers only cover what they can see and touch. They don't take a wrench to their 'new' (or any other) car. Some have actually been citing Sandy's disassembly videos and offered their own twist when there is Sandy with the parts in hand, tools, and decades of professional experience. These 3d party reports, even those by new owners, can often be classified as "eye candy" and should be treated with some skepticism.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Europe
Link to a story about Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Europe.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Surpasses 50,000 Units Sold in UK
My daughter, who lives in Florida, had an Outlander and although it was kind of dated mechanically, it was a decent car. The biggest problem was that she bought a red one and the sun really does a number on red vehicles in Florida.
I guess the market for this type vehicle is better in Europe because of regulations.
They sell them here and a dealer near me has 3. They are asking $36k for them. FuelEconomy.gov lists them at 75 mpge for the first 22 miles and then 25 mpg after so not so great after the battery is depleted but it might not be bad for a grocery getter. They might be the least advertised PHEV in the country.Ronald Doles Apr 2, 2020 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 3,149 Likes: 0 Replies: 27 -

Toyota develops an electrostatic paint gun
I worked for a lot of years designing and building automotive paint systems. There were developments over the years that made significant improvements.
Due to ever increasing emission requirements the primer and color coat were switched to water based paint. The clear coat remained solvent based because they couldn't get enough sheen from water borne paint for that.
E-coat (electro coat) paint lines are used to put the primer on the white bodies (bare metal). In what looks like a glorified car wash the bodies move through a tunnel and they are rinsed of dust. Next a detergent is applied then they are rinsed with de-ionized water. The conveyor dips them in a phosphate tank. The phosphate etches the surface of the metal. The surface changes from a smooth texture to something like a piece of paper so that the paint has something to bond to. There is a final D.I. rinse and then they go through a drying oven.
The bodies are then picked up by an overhead conveyor and then go to the...Ronald Doles Mar 16, 2020 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,189 Likes: 4 Replies: 4
