Ontario now fining drivers $125 for ICEing a charging spot
Great news!
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/electric-vehicle-parking-fine-1.5394288
Also applies to EVs parked and not charging. I guess that means you can’t leave a sign saying “unplug me if needed” anymore, or you could run the risk of getting fined after someone unplugs you?
Great news nonetheless. -
ICE vs BEV pricing
Several good points in this recent article. One notable point for me - “Yes, the plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles do cost more, but typically what the automakers have done is stagger their pricing, so that the high-end, all-gasoline version will be not too much less than the entry-level electric version,” Klippenstein said. “Almost no one really buys the bare-bones combustion version. And realizing that there’s a higher price point, automakers tend to stuff in more features for hybrids.”

Hybrids to combat pollution and global warming
I was reading the latest Consumer Reports and they said "Eliminating unnecessary engine idling of personal vehicles vehicles would reduce as many emissions and save as much fuel as taking 5 million vehicles off US roads." That's huge. How come the Government doesn't offer tax breaks for and incentivize hybrids?MikeDee Dec 12, 2019 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 5,117 Likes: 3 Replies: 43 -
Ethanol Free 90 octane fuel
We winter in Florida and I stopped to fill up our Odyssey yesterday at a new gas station that wasn't here last year. I was surprised that there were 5 fuel choices at each pump.
10% ethanol 87 octane @ $2.45
10% ethanol 89 octane @ $2.81
10% ethanol 91 octane @ $3.11
Straight 90 octane @ $3.15
Diesel @ $2.69
My daughter commented that she tried a tank of the Straight 90 octane in her Honda Element and it didn't seem to make a difference. I explained that it would probably only give her about 3% better mileage and for the higher price per gallon it wasn't worth it.
The biggest consumer was probably boaters as they have to pay upwards of $5/gallon at the dock for fuel. I would think that it is probably popular with motorcyclist and others like lawn mowing services that use small engines that don't take pleasure in rebuilding carburetors all the time.
I wish that they offered Straight 90 octane choice in Ohio as my Cub Cadet which I thought would burn almost anything runs rough...Ronald Doles Dec 12, 2019 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 6,814 Likes: 3 Replies: 54 -
Hi-Hy
We've been discussing hybrid vs PHEV vs BEV and here is an excellent Toyota hybrid example:
No, I'm not tempted as much as admire what Toyota has accomplished. It is a big car with ICE Camry mileage.

Unlike Toyota, GM to build a US Battery Factory
Yeah! GM now sees tesla wisdom - years after the fact - but still .... partnering with Korea to build batteries - (instead of gas burners) for their future cars! Go GM!
Just when you think GM may be down & out ... after killing off the Chevy Volt - they go & show off, that they see the writing on the wall ... that GM is desperately short on battery suppliers

Japanese hybrids are beating the slump in China’s car market
So Japanese hybrids are the fastest growing car market segment in China.
I find it interesting that Chinese EV makers are using LiFePO4 for their EV batteries which has much longer cycle life. But range anxiety is still a concern.
Japanese hybrids are beating the slump in China’s car market
"Sales of Japanese brands’ hybrids have risen about 30% this year in China to more than 220,000, making the vehicles one of the fastest-growing market segment, according to the association. Japanese carmakers control about 99% of the traditional hybrid market in China, according to numbers from consultancy WAYS Information Technology Co. that exclude plug-in vehicles.
Among the reasons shoppers are going for hybrids is range anxiety — the fear that an electric car’s battery runs out and leaves the driver stranded. China’s charging infrastructure is in early... -
MPG
SINCE I have had my Prius 2010 Model my MPG has been at 44-45 City, 47-50 Hwy. Up until recently things have been really good then I had the new software update and I swear on the hwy I cant get over 38 MPG. I went back to the dealership and they told me nothing was wrong that I should drive in ECO mode more and so on. I have lost 70-80 MPG per each full tank of gas. Any advice on what the heck is going on? -
