Wards eulogy
Source: http://wardsauto.com/engines/groundbreaking-prius-hybrid-evolves-over-20-years
The world’s best-selling hybrid car went on sale Dec. 10, 1997. Toyota sold only 323 of the bubble-shaped cars that year, enough for it to win the “Japan Car of the Year” award, although most models were not delivered until after the New Year.
Since its launch, Toyota has sold 4.3 million units. Cumulative hybrid sales by the automaker, including 36 other Toyota and Lexus models introduced over the past two decades, have grown to 11 million, including 1.5 million this year. Of these, 220,000 are Priuses.
No other hybrid model by any other automaker, including Toyota, is close. No other automaker is close....bwilson4web Dec 29, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 1,666 Likes: 6 Replies: 12 -

Hyundai Ioniq plug-in starting at $24950
2018 Hyundai IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid Priced From $24,950
Wow, that's a fairly impressive price. 29 miles of electric, and 52 mpg. This is definitely a Prius Prime-challenger.
I also love that battery prices continue to fall, so it's slowly closing the gap vs traditional gas cars and non-plug in hybrids. So let's see what happens in by 2020.

Seminal paper on optically mapped, 3d space
The success of autonomous driving is limited by the sensors, typically optically based, that map what is seen in front of the car. Both distance, direction, and the calculated relative velocities are critical to guiding a car to avoid other moving and stationary objects. So this paper describes an improved approach:
http://web.media.mit.edu/~achoo/beat/Kadambi_beat_lowres.pdf
Radar works by timing a reflected signal but the problem is sensor time resolution, they are too slow to achieve more than centimeter resolution. This paper outlines how to 'heterodyne' the transmitted and reflected light to achieve millimeter resolution. Better still, it appears to mitigate the fog problem.
There is a big gap between lab and product but the math and physics laid out here is the roadmap to improved, autonomous driving sensors (and others.) Ones that may not require mechanical sweeping of the field.

Volt future
Source: AD #2259 – GM Pulls the Plug on the Volt, ZF Uses Blockchain For Car Sharing, Can Tesla Hit Its Goals? – Autoline Daily
. . . The data house [Autoforecast rjw] says the Volt will go out of production in 2022 at GM’s Hamtramck plant in Detroit. It appears that instead, GM is going to put all its efforts behind its aggressive plan to intro 20 battery electric cars by 2023. Even though the Volt was completely redesigned last year and sales shot up 60%, it didn’t last. This year sales of the Volt are down over 12% and fell 33% last month. Looks like GM decided it was time to pull the plug on its plug-in.

Whether it’s good or bad, there’s no company in the auto industry right now that can grab headlines like Tesla. The company has struggled building the Model 3. At the same time, it’s introducing new products like the Roadster and a semi-truck. Tesla going for a mileage record
Source: Elon Musk shares Instagram photo of a Tesla atop a Falcon Heavy rocket - Business Insider
In a series of tweets on Dec. 1, SpaceX founder and tech billionaire Elon Musk said he planned to launch a Tesla electric car to Mars orbit in 2018.
Musk toyed with the popular press, first by confirming his plans with The Verge, then backpedaling the claim, then re-confirming it with Ars Technica and several other media outlets.
But if Musk has left any room for doubt, it is now gone with a...bwilson4web Dec 22, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 3,354 Likes: 6 Replies: 37
