    This anecdote will date me: During the 1979 oil crisis, I was filling up my VW one day when an old guy on the opposite pump began bitterly cursing about having to pay $1.50 a gallon for gasoline — $5.60 in today’s money. He probably expected to hear a “damn right, mister,” but I nodded toward my car. Sure, I said, gas prices are nuts. But I get almost 30 mpg on the highway. If my choice is to walk 30 miles, a buck fifty still seems like a bargain.

    First VW ID.4 Rolls Off Chattanooga Assembly Line

    The first Volkswagen ID.4 electric car has rolled off the production line at the automaker's Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory, VW Group of America CEO Scott Keogh announced Thursday in a LinkedIn post. Mass production doesn't start until next year, however.

    Finished in Glacier White Metallic, the first completed car is a validation build used to test out the assembly process and all related components. This is standard procedure for automakers ramping up production of a new model, and in this case could span more than 200 vehicles. Validation builds are not sold to the public, and are generally scrapped once they've served their purpose.

    Summation (bold mine): "Comparing across powertrains, the HEV is the vehicle powertrain with the lowest cost of ownership over a 15-year span, at 44.6¢/mile. The ICE-SI, ICE-CI, FCEV, and PHEV50 all have costs around 48¢/mile. The BEV300 has the highest cost, at 51.8¢/mile, though the shorter-range BEV200 (not pictured) has a cost of 45.3¢/mile. The comparatively high costs for BEV300 come from assumed battery costs of $170/kWh in 2025 in the Autonomie model (Islam et al. 2020), though BEV would reach cost parity with HEV at a cost of $102/kWh. For all powertrains, the vehicle cost is the single most expensive cost over the 15-year analysis window.
