Yes, it might not be much of an icon if you’re someone with petrol flowing thick and fast through the veins. However, few deny that the model helped revolutionise hybrid technology for the masses.

But while there are hordes of Priui (sic) on the road today, very few of them are new. The model has never been a volume seller for Toyota here, but has struck particularly tough times of late. This is true of the nameplate globally, too.

A big part of the Prius’ decline is that its hybrid party trick is no longer particularly unique within the brand’s line-up. Why buy a Prius when you can get a hybrid RAV4 or Corolla instead?

Tesla cuts Model S prices by $3,000 in the US

Tesla quietly updated the pricing on its website overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday. The two currently available variants of the Model S have been given $3,000 price cuts each. The Long Range Plus' price drops from $74,990 to $71,990, while the Performance variant goes from $94,990 and $91,990. The automaker's website also lists the Plaid model at $139,900, but it has not been given a price reduction; it'll be made available to consumers until next year. Heck, even the newest models aren't immune to price adjustments. In July, Tesla reduced the price of the Model Y by $3,000 to nudge its newest EV under the $50,000 mark.

BMW Canada offers a PHEV version of all its major model lines — 3, 5, and 7 Series, as well as the X3 and X5. More than 30 per cent of the Panameras sold by Porsche Canada last year were E-Hybrid PHEVs. Volvo’s T8 models, meanwhile, are the sportiest cars the sleepy Swedish marque makes and Mercedes-Benz is promising that there will be no fewer than 20 plug-in hybrids in its worldwide fleet by next year.

Perhaps the most incredible story, however, is that the once dominant Prius is now completely overshadowed by its more expensive PHEV sibling, the Prime’s 6,658 sales in 2019 more than tripling the number of regular hybrids Toyota Canada sold.
