Hyundai prices Sonata Hybrid just over CAD$40,000

Hyundai’s new Sonata Hybrid will start at $40,099, and will be made available in just a single trim with features like an innovative solar-panel roof.

That puts it above even the top-level $38,599 Ultimate trim Sonata, though it does have many of that car’s features, like a 10.25-inch widescreen display with navigation; 12-speaker Bose premium audio; and a 12.3-inch fully digital LCD cluster and head-up display.

For that money, the powertrain you’ll get is a 2.0L Smartstream four-cylinder mated to a 38-kW electric motor, good for a combined 192 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.

A 1.62-kWh battery can be topped up by the aforementioned solar cells — Hyundai says how sunny it is where you live, six hours of rays a day on that panel can net you up to 1,300 free kilometres of charge (though in February, a U.S. release figured it closer to 1,125 km). Combined fuel economy is rated at 5.0 L/100 km.

The 2020 Sonata Hybrid should hit Canadian order forms beginning in May....

It’s the Toyota Prius’ party and it can cry if it wants to. Two decades after its North American debut, the Prius is reportedly set to mark the occasion with a special edition. Whether or not the new reigning champ of the hybrid scene, the Prius’s own RAV4 Hybrid stablemate, is invited to the bash remains unknown.

Yes, the Prius has come a long way since its 2001 introduction, but time can either solidify a front-runner’s position or see it fall behind the pack, overtaken by changing trends. The Prius falls into the latter category.

As reported by Cars Direct, a 2021 order guide reveals the presence of a Prius 20th Anniversary Edition for the coming model year. The first such edition rolled out back in 2017 to mark the model’s debut in Japan.
