VW offers nearly $12,000 in incentives to German buyers trading in a diesel

BERLIN — Volkswagen will offer up to 10,000 euros ($11,810) in premiums to buyers of VW brand vehicles trading in an older diesel model, the carmaker said on Tuesday.

The world's largest automaker will also offer incentives worth between 1,000 euros and 2,380 euros for purchasing alternative energy vehicles including electric, hybrid and natural-gas-powered cars, it said.

VW said the incentives are effective immediately and will run through the end of this year as part of a deal agreed last week with German top-level politicians to help tackle diesel pollution.

It's a technology that's been a sort of Holy Grail in the auto industry for at least a couple of decades.

Now Mazda, one of the smallest global automakers, plans to introduce it in a radical new engine to be used in a future Mazda vehicle in 2019.

It's called homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI: in essence it lets a gasoline engine behave like a diesel under low-power demand, vastly improving its efficiency.

The Volkswagen e-Golf launched in Canada in late June, tallying 39 sales before the month’s end, and followed that with 84 units in its first full month of availability.

Aided by the e-Golf, the Toyota Prius Prime and the soon-to-arrive second-generation Nissan Leaf, plug-in electric vehicles may push above 1 percent of the market for Canadian new vehicles—even before the Tesla Model 3’s Canadian debut.

While the Chevy Volt won its 16th straight sales title in Canada during July, its sales of 231 were down about one-third, both month-over-month and year-over-year.
