Car Review: 2016 Honda CR-Z

Colleagues of mine here at Driving often speculate as to which new models today will be the hot collectibles of tomorrow. With its sporty manual transmission, hybrid powerplant and boy-racer styling, don’t bet against the 2016 Honda CR-Z being a hot item at a Barrett-Jackson auction in, say, 2030.

Further enhancing its value is the fact this model year marks the last for the hybrid-powered two-seater, which debuted in 2010 as the ‘spiritual successor’ to the CR-X, incidentally a model that is today in high demand with collectors.

Honda announced the discontinuation of the CR-Z last month, citing anemic global sales and a renewed emphasis on two new electrified models – presumably the Accord and Clarity,...

In the auto world, the price of stamping body panels and screwing everything together is a relatively small expense in the overall cost of a car. The truly big bucks — and they can easily reach well into the multi-millions — go into engineering and development. So, to amortize that investment, automakers try to spin off as many vehicles as possible.

All of this brings us to a car that’s essentially a mash-up of Toyota’s Prius hybrid and its subcompact Yaris hatchback. In Japan it’s known as the Aqua, while here in North America, it’s the Prius C. Introduced for 2012 along with the Prius V wagon, it was the first time more than one model had been offered under that hybrid nameplate. The Prius receives a makeover for 2016, but the Prius C soldiers on as it was.
