Maybe a poll of inside face-to-face dims of the various filter sockets would help? At least with the jamming issue. The honda socket I'm using has an inside face-to-face dim of 64.5 mm, more or less spot-on that number, measured with a dial caliper.

What tool do you use to measure this? Can I just very very very carefully use a ruler?

I would use a manual or digital caliper, for best results. Take care to be as square-on as possible, and at the centers of the faces:

    Good Father's Day present...

I had a cheap digital caliper for some time, that gleefully ate up batteries. Then decided I needed something more old-school. The made-in-Japan brand names were, I forget, but well over $100 IIRC, so I went with a no-name made-in-China which is just fine, nice and solid, comes with a nice case, about $30.

Haha. I didn't even realize you had the tool in the socket to measure it on that side of the caliper. I used the other side and placed it as carefully as I could on top and eyeballed that it was aligned!!!!!

Not really, both numbers are correct. I just think in foot/pounds.

We're "metric" up here, some of it took, some: not so much. For example: back a decade or so if there was a missing person report in the news, they would describe their height and weight in cm's and kilos. They've now quietly reverted to feet/inches and pounds. I guess metric reports, the people stayed missing: NOBODY has a clue what they are talking about, lol.

We were there in Vancouver maybe a couple of years ago. I noticed in the small fruit/vegetable shops that they would note prices per pound. My uncle said it's to make it sound you get more for your money....

It's nice to see what the official Toyota SST looks like. Similar to Mendel's Honda cap wrench, this is stamped steel and there is no way it is going to fall apart under reasonable usage.

It also has an oblong hole to help in the event that the cap wrench gets stuck to the plastic oil filter cap.

I'm just wondering why the part number of your SST is off by one digit compared to the repair manual info I have:

Patrick, I very vaguely remember ordering this tool. I just checked my copy of the service info, and it has the -06501 part number as well. I think it doesn't matter that mine is a '12 Prius v, not a Gen 3. So I'm sure I tried to order 09228-06501, and maybe they told me it was superseded and sent me this one. Works perfectly fine, except as you slide it on you can tell by the slight friction as it goes on that it is going to be stuck. I did not use the hole designed for if it is stuck. I did not want to risk damaging the cap and my position under the car didn't give me good access to it anyways. I took a large flat head screwdriver and placed it carefully on the edge shown on the second picture. I proceeded to tap with my plastic mallet until it came loose....

I usually use an extension on the ratchet when removing or installing the filter housing, and find a left/right wiggle on that levers it loose, if it's sticking.

Learned that only the thick sided cast metal (not the Autozone stamped metal) Toyota filter tool works without stripping. I normally do my own oil changes. My problem was caused by taking my 2010 to the dealer for a $7 oil change where I successfully argued that the coupon did not exclude synthetic. His payback was to overtighten the cap with the impact wrench. The next oil change I tried a breaker bar extender and put all my 280lbs feet first and could not loosen the cap. I ended up using my 4Runner with a 2 1/2" tow strap tied to the breaker bar and eased it back to break the hold.

Looks like there's 4 dealerships in town. Would you care to share which is the one to avoid?

Yeah, I know, this could be a trick question, answer: all of them. :ROFLMAO:

My filter socket is cast aluminum, no square drive hole, just a "bolt head" type extension. I used my Mitutoyo caliper and measured 64.2 mm and 64.3 mm. I thought maybe it should be 64 mm even so I degreased it and painted the inside with five coats of plastic paint. it now measures 64.1 mm. Maybe because the inside is now "slippery" it won't stick? We'll see in a year or so. ;)

With any tolerance case, you have to have some gap. It might be something like:

filter: 64.0 mm, plus zero, minus 0.2
socket: 64.2 mm, minus zero, plus 0.2
