First Trip in new PIP = 27mpg (my '11 Prius 2 gets 60+mpg for same trip)

I am hoping a seasoned PIP owner can give me some tips on how to get a better second impression of my new car. I just traded in my '11 Prius for a '12 Plug In and I am already regretting it. The trip from the dealer to my house usually gets me at least 60mpg. I left the lot excited to use about 9 of the 13 EV miles it would take me to get home. That worked great for most of the trip. I stayed at 99mpg until the very last minute of the trip at which point it inexplicably began chewing up gas even though it showed 4.2 miles of EV remaining. I had briefly stopped in front of my house before pulling around to the back parking pad where the outlet for charging it is. That little trip around the block was a serious gas guzzler - like H2 level guzzling. Final tally = 27mpg. That is a huuuuuuuge disappointment. I wish I could trade back right now. Anybody have a clue where I went wrong?

I think you got 270 mpg and you thought it read "27.0". Because 270 would be ridiculous if it weren't a PiP.

It must be a mistake by the computer, sounds like it reset before you moved the car around the corner. Maybe you shut the ignition or something when parking as well. Have you thought about trying the same trip again and resetting trip A or B to see if the same result happens?

When I first got mine trip A and B were really low, like in the 20's because the car mostly sat running in front of the dealer and going on short test drives the last 2 months. Now they are up in the 120+ range.

Also anytime the engine starts up either for heat, acceleration or out of EV range, it won't shut off again before the engine has been warmed to the specified level.

I traded my 2011 prius for a 2012 plugin and calculated fuel economy was 79.7 mpg for the first 1000 miles here in tropical Buffalo NY.
EV use is 31% (I plug it in at home and work when possible).

You may have been reading the numbers wrong. Driving 9 miles in EV only, no ICE the mileage should have read 999mpg not 99. One minute of ICE at the end might have dropped it to 270 like the other poster said.

270 mpg vs 60 mpg... sounds like the plug-in is the winner here! Oh what a feeling!

The giveaway is when OP said it read 99 mpg. Pip reads 999 mpg, not 99, when in EV.

Haha, yes, that is the case. This is a case of not being able to see what you previously did not know to exist. The concept of 270mpg is not something I could comprehend so I imagined a decimal where none existed. Freakout officially over.

You know you are a PiP owner when your numbers get that 'low' ;)

My '11 Prius usually filled up on about 9.6 gallons of gas when I would run it down to 0 miles. Is the plug-in capacity smaller? I'm wondering because at my current pace I will likely get about 525 miles on my first tank. The car tells me I'm getting 65mpg, but math tells me otherwise unless the tank is considerably smaller than the regular Prius. For these numbers to work I should only have to put in 8 gallons when I hit 0 on my trip.

Regular Prius has 11.9 gallon tank. PiP has 10.6.

Do they each hold about 2.3 gallons in reserve? I never put more than 9.6 gallons into my regular Prius. That would mean I can expect to fill up the PIP with about 8.3 which comes close to lining up the current mpg.

This ride will not let you down. I Just filled up after a 671 miles. 67 mpg. 10 gallons on fill up. I charge once a day, 32 miles round trip.
