Fixing the "grayed out arrows" in Entune/Nav System

It's really annoying that Toyota feels that they have to disable certain features to prevent distractive driver activities, but they provide no way for the passenger to do those activities (like a button on the passenger door to enable those features while moving). I ran into the same problem with my 2002 Prius: as a passenger, I cannot set destinations while moving. On our Honda Pilot, these features are not disabled, so I don't think it is a legal thing.

In the Gen 2, the phone was disabled when in motion as well (the navigation was too, but for some there was a diagnostic screen override). I've read the "hack" there was to find the speed sensor wire and splice in a switch. Disconnecting the speed sensor would enable the grayed out buttons, but would screw up the nav location (which is partly based on speed). The nav location would readjust a little bit after the speed sensor was restored.

 

Here's a company that make a bypass for the Gen III. Not sure if it will work with the new Entune system. This issue has been discussed at length. Apparently, there is no easy fix.

There are hardware devices/hacks that serve this purpose. There's one that was developed by forum member cproaudio (its a sticky in the Accessories and Modifications forum). It sounds like he will be selling them in the PC Store. I read it last night and he mentioned something about the 2012 head unit. He also posted diagrams and pictures if you feel up to the challenge of making your own,

There are other companies that make such devices (Beatsonic and Prestigious Society or something like that). But I haven't looked into whether their existing units work with the 2012 units or not. I'm sure if they do not, they will have something in the near future.

How is the install, and how do you like the functionality? Do you plan on using an external video input source?

I have the Prestigious Society solution for my PiP. It looks like a very simple install (the new version doesn't even require you to use their "switch" and it's entirely managed behind the head unit) but you have to be comfortable pulling out the dashboard, etc... to access the head unit. I am not planning on using an external video source, I got it purely for the nav functionality. Personally, I decided to hire a pro installer as I didn't want to be playing around with my brand new car and it's at most, an hour of work so it was well worth the labor cost for an installer. It works great.

Nothing ticks me more than not being able to use the nav system on-the-go. It's a shame Toyota is going to make me spend $300 to make that happen.

 

And it doesn't disrupt your position on the Nav Map display?

 

It does temporarily. When you "override" the system, the GPS location is disabled. I have not found this to be an issue as we use it to enter an address and then resume the GPS activity. It finds us in a few seconds.

 

Sounds like it might solve the problem...although a bit expensive. Has anyone considered a group buy? Maybe they would give us a discount?

 

If you check out this video, you will see that it not that difficult to remove the NAV head unit.
