Ford maverick - Anyone else skeptical about Ford's "40 MPG in the city" claim?

    looks like the 700cc powered things they were driving around in the 1960's. Seems like every manufacturer had some version of these. They came in a van version as well.

    They certainly were cheap, because they had 0 safety features . That would probably double their costs not even counting all of the smog devices they selldom had . Rolling death traps - looks like they could be totaled just by running shopping carts into them


    2019 (Gen II) Volt - is > 3,550 Lbs - yet it gets a blended 42mpg epa - as well as >50 ev miles range. So .... it would seem the Maverick could get into the 40's EPA.

    Not bad...but very, very little context. I'm sure he was going about 10 miles an hour. :whistle: Mike Levine is also the Ford "North America Product Communications director". But interesting to see that '50 MPG' is 'possible'.

    Dang it...and I thought I had rationalized my way out of getting one for now....must resist. :ROFLMAO:

    Since it’s a HEV, disregard the “EV miles” figure. Very rough math says a little under 30mph avg. so city/urban driving for sure. I believe he was in downtown Nashville for a MAV event so it adds up. Eco driving but nothing in the hypermile zone. Like my C-Max, it should get really good MPG’s till the aerodynamics take over.

    My guess for EPA: 40 city, 37 Combined, 36 hwy with real world highway of 33-35mpg. I’m hoping the numbers come out this week.

    Yep...I'm pretty certain this was a slow 'summer city driving' scenario...with emphasis on slow :ROFLMAO:. Still nice to see though.

    Truth be told...I've rarely, if ever, hit 50 MPG in the Prius v (wagon)...even in ideal city driving conditions.

    10 mph tail wind, in summer at 55 mph level smooth road = 55 mpg.

    Yup rarely 50 mpg, 46 in summer 35 in winter average.

    Official EPA numbers for the hybrid still aren’t out; however, the media embargo lifted today and Alex on Auto’s is saying 40city/34hwy/37combined. He did an approx. 150 mile trip with a mix of driving including 70mph highway and heavy a/c use (64f set on a 85f day) and got 42 mpg (I assume display). He towed 1500 lbs and still managed 28mpg.

    Uggh. Unfortunately that FAKE image has gained traction. It’s from a meme thread on a maverick forum that someone submitted as a joke. Then, he kept posting it in other threads even after others protested...... His original image that he got from Ford is blank in the fuel economy section.

    the amount of data about hybrid power trains that has been compiled over the last 30 years is staggering. of course Ford could make a more efficient drivetrain than what we have seen. if their regen is aggressive and smart, and the electric motor is used for the grunt work leaving green lights, yup.

    there are so many improvements to be made in the drivetrain, gear ratios final drives, materials used, etc

    but the highway milage will suffer compared to things that aren't shaped like a box

    YUP!!!!

    I may be the only person here who can say they’ve owned a Gen 2, 3, 4, and, just recently, a Prius Prime as well as a Ford hybrid (c-max Energi). It’s absolutely amazing to see (in mpg numbers) and feel (in grunt) the improvements through the years. The move to LiOn packs is a big deal in the mpg department.


    I ordered a hybrid but am now getting cold feet and thinking of waiting for the PHEV version. Once you go plug, it’s VERY hard to go back.

    I found the problem , 40mpg city is only meh

    My 1982 diesel Suburban 5sp manual 2wd was a 29mpg experience at lower highway speeds :0


    I too am very disappointed the FORD PHEV that was to launch in late 2017 is perpetually delayed as a Euro zone offering with another 3-5 years to go before hitting our shores

    The fires that have happened in Europe are the reason for the delay here. Now the issues with parts supplies and shipping are an issue.

    I'm waiting regardless...decided to keep the vehicles we have for a couple more years. (y) Just put Michelin Crossclimate 2's on one of them.....those buggers aren't cheap! o_O

    Really odd that the EPA numbers are still not out yet for the hybrid Maverick. I view that as not very good news. As @Rmay635703 said above...I agree that Ford very well may be in 'intense negotiations' with the EPA. :ROFLMAO:

    The monroney isn’t tested by the EPA, Ford does it by prescription and should be able to move unilaterally unless the crash ratings aren’t decided.

    Only other possibility is Ford is afraid of another MPG gate lawsuit and is interacting more closely with the EPA to avoid liability

    True, but the EPA needs to sign off on the manufacture's results, and does double check by testing about 10% of cars themselves in a normal year. Considering Ford's behavior with the C-max and Fusion, the EPA may have chosen the Maverick for testing on their own.

    Or maybe the EPA doesn't want to, and it is just pandemic related slow down on their end.
    Or this is just taking the normal amount of time, but it seems longer because we having nothing better to do than watch this.:p

    PS - I previously listed a Escape hybrid curb weight that was actually for the PHEV. The hybrid SE is around 200 pounds lighter than the Maverick SE.

    Personally, I'll never buy a Ford anything ever (bad history). But I am very interesting in seeing what kind of MPG the 2022 Tundra Hybrid will be getting.
    A co-worker just ordered a RAV-4 hybrid so will have to go out and check that out. With our crazy gas prices (thanks, Biden) I think Toyota will be selling a record number of hybrids in the next few years.
