Early senility or perhaps just a busy mind has led me to turn off the ignition key before shifting from drive back to park. This is obviously not natural for the car but it did not seem to do any harm. I am wondering however if it can be damaged by this?

no, assuming it's the same as the hatchback. although we have a power button instead of a key, pressing power off without pressing the park button first is not an issue. the computer takes care of it.

I have SKS so I looked up the US user manual on pg 159:

How can you remove the key when the shift lever is not in P?

OK, that explains it. You still need to put in park, just the sequence is different.

The C with SKS doesn't have park button so the behavior is different.
    1. If the hybrid system is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P, the “POWER” switch will not be turned off but instead be turned to ACCESSORY mode.
    2. If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode, 12-volt battery discharge may occur.
    3. The “POWER” switch was turned to ACCESSORY mode while the driver's door was open (or the
driver's door was opened when the “POWER” switch was in ACCESSORY mode.), the Interior alarm
      sounds continuously.
So there is still a safeguard if shift lever were not put to P.

Thank you. Good information on the safeguards. I did note that turning the key did shut down the engine while in drive so my concern was in regard to the shut down while in gear and any potential ill affects.
    Thanks again,
    Steve
