Maybe, since I have not been on much, but is it just me, or do the forums in the past couple of months seem a little less friendly.

Do not get me wrong. Things are still pretty pleasing here, which is one reason I do like these forums, but it just seems like some especially nasty undercurrents.

Hey, not me, I haven't insulted Mendel for a couple of weeks at least.

I have noticed an uptick of "show ignored members" on a lot of threads the past week or so. I can only assume the two people on my ignore list are posting a lot. I saw a post where friendly_jacek was arguing with one of them.

Having people to ignore is normal. You would have personal issues if you liked or hated everyone here.

What is this "show ignored" thing I see mmmodem posting about....hmmm....guess that shows that mmmodem is not on my list.

But seriously, I have about five "ignores," have never seen that thing, I think....but...then...maybe I am on my own ignore list.

Or they simply not posting in the threads you frequent.
For instance, I have no idea who Mendel is, but it sounds like I would if I have seen his posts.

Mendel is a good person who posts now and again and I only picked his name to use as it is a bit memorable.

No issue with Mendel....I could have easily have picked Uart or Patrick. None of whom would ever be on any bad list of mine.

If the person you ignored posted on the thread then the option will show up at the bottom of the thread to show their posts. If you never see that phrase then that means the people you ignored haven't posted on any threads you read.

I don't ignore anyone. It does seem like there are some flames sprouting up here and there where mutual respect used to rule. I would postulate that our forum is a microcosm of society in general, and society is becoming a little less tolerant and more judgmental. Too much stress! Deep cleansing breath everyone.

"Hay fever," it might be seasonal. If you can't get a good night sleep, all sorts of patience can be lost.

My wife's health has significantly improved and that has taken a burden off my mind. So if I was a little short with folks out side of Fred's House of Politics (or Pillow Fights,) my apologies.

    Part of it is generational.

    Not the drivers, the cars.
(this will be both simplified and generalized)

    Gen 1 owners were ecological.
Saving gas was to save the world.
(Gen 1 owners will put up wit a LOT to save the world)

    Gen 2 owners were economical.
Saving gas was to save operating costs.
(Gen 2 owners will put up with some awkwardness to save money)

Gen 3 owners are car owners.
They may have bought their Prius to look good, to hold a lot of stuff, to have advanced electronics, it may be a company car they HAVE to drive, etc.
Saving gas should be something the car does, not something they do. (Gen 3 owners are not inclined to put up with any limitations in the car)

So there are cultural battles between generations. Some of this is embedded in the site. (I have been here 6 years, and the entire time the Gen 1 forum has been hidden. No one knows why. If you are not a Gen 1 owner, time how long it takes you to find it.) Notice how extensive the Gen 2 fuel economy forums are compared to Gen 1 where repairs and maintenance dominate, or Gen 3, where electronics, different wheels, and slamming your car rule the conversations.

Anyway, common ground is becoming rarer and rarer, even though no one is to blame.

Nice post, Jimbo (and that's not just an obligatory "friendly opening" ;) )

Some of us gen 3 owners were too economical to be gen 2 owners - I couldn't move to the Prius until I drove my previous car to the ground!

I don't think there was a separate gen1 and gen 2 area when I joined. There really wasn't enough gen1 members to justify it at first, then I think we got tired of asking for people the specify what gen they had when asking for help.
