    the jury (if there is one) will likely be made up of neophytes like me.

    and then there are elected officials (ag's, judges, etc) who can be swayed by the court of public opinion.

    In most of America, if the jury is a representative sample of the adult population, it would have several non-neophytes. More in rural areas, less in urban zones. It would take deliberate efforts in jury selection to keep them off, just as certain lawyers have intentionally worked to keep Blacks off juries.

    Where I grew up, a jury would have a very heavy majority of non-neophytes.
