In case you haven't found this yet - here's a link to Eric Garcetti's blog, where he indeed confirms that hybrid parking is still free in LA until at least the end of May:
    www.lacity.org/test/cd13/page.cfm?doc=home
Printing just that one relevant page (currently 3) should give us something more or less official in writing.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello All,

Just a final (I think) update on this topic from me. I FINALLY received the letter from the Parking Violations folks removing the ticket from my car's record. I am keeping the letter handy, partly because it makes a neat souvenir and mostly because I don't trust those folks as far as I could throw 'um.

Still, it is good to see that my Prius has been deemed a hybrid again. That window sticker (which is what I had to send them to verify my car's entitlement) sure came in handy. I urge anyone else who has either recently purchased their car or who is a bit of a saver (like me) to keep that sticker just to be on the safe side.

Also, I am again urging all and sundry to check their registrations and make sure that they are classed as a "Q" and not a "G" under engine type. If your car is miss-catagorized it will cause you difficulties in the future.

By the way, this change in classification just came about somewhat recently so if your car is a 2004 or earlier it may be incorrectly marked owing to the new designation but will still possibly need the change just so that you don't run into the difficulty that I ran into because of that silly letter.

I am still waiting for the updated paperwork for my car to arrive. That will be the next hurdle/battle to be fought.

I have also made a sign/placard that I use in my car when it is parked at a meter to show it's special status as I have not "Idiot Proofed" her yet with decals and such.

    Take care all,

    Tisza

Strange. I bought my car in Feb. '04 and it has a Q listed under engine type on the registration form. Maybe it has something to do with the dealerships who fill out the DMV forms and send it out to them.

One caveat to the free parking in LA. You can only park for free for the time timit shown on the meter or sign. So if you park in a 1 hour zone for 1 1/2 hrs, they can ticket you. (They put a chalk mark on the tires and look for them when they come back)

BTW, I've also parked for free in LA city metered lots. No tickets, no promblems

    Hi All,

Long time, no post but I have been super busy of late... Anyhoo, this is (at this point) the absolutely last post that I think that I will need to make on this topic.

After receiving the letter from Parking Violations officially clearing the ticket from my and my car's records, I received the duplicate registration that my dealership had filed for on my behalf to change the "G" versus "Q" coding.

Low and behold, the new registration card said... (drum roll please)... "G" Ta Da! OK, so that was a bit dramatic, but I was pretty excited to see the change and then pretty irked to find that nothing was different.

So, this time I trotted over to good old DMV to handle this myself. I was the first person that they had encountered thus far, that had this problem. Well, after a demi-conference with the supervisor on what needed to be done and how to do it, it was determined that the car needed to be inspected by a DMV inspector to verify her hybrid status (he looked at the back end, the door tag and the motor and then "OFFICIALLY DECLARED MY CAR A HYBRID!"

    FINALLY!!!!

He was a very nice guy and was very interested in the car and all it's wonders. After giving him the .50 cent tour, I gave him the card for my dealer and suggested he give them a call.

I now have a new registration that corrected the "G" to a "Q" and verified with the DMV folks that the change did need to be made to prevent all sorts of nonsense in the future.

I strongly urge everyone who has a Prius (new or classic) to check their coding and if you have anything other than a letter "Q" (here in California at least, I don't know if this is a nationwide code) to take the steps to get this changed.

    Hope all are well.

    Good luck and take care,

    Tisza

I just got my registration and found a "Q" but it was listed under MP, not engine type. I don't see "Engine Type" anywhere on my registration card.

    BEWARE!

Tomorrow, Tues 5/30, is the end of the current LA free parking perk.

If it isn't extended you might pick up a few of those 35$ tickets. (and won't have a lot of recourse to fight it.)

If anyone hears otherwise, please post the information.

Official Notice from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Office:

Illegal Aliens without a valid drivers license can now park anywhere in Los Angeles without payment of meter fees or regard for time limits or curb coloring. Any meter maid who dares cite such an individual is guilty of a hate crime and will be punished accordingly.

All other owners of vehicles will be fined double, since they enjoy the benefits of citizenship.

Hybrid owners are thanked for their willingness to pay exorbitant sums of money in an effort to make the world a better place for those of us unwilling to spend our own money for that purpose. We however will also gladly spend your money. Your free parking privileges are suspended as soon as I take reign.

    Gracias,
    Office of Antonio Villaraigosa
    Mayor of Los Angeles, Azatlan

    Advocate,

This is not funny and is a perpetuation of an outrageous racist stereotype.

Your statements play right into the hands of those who look to take away your rights as an American.

    IsrAmeriPrius,
Unfortunately it is only a SLIGHT exaggeration. The truth is even more disturbing. The caption should have read from the office of Gil Cedillo and not Antonio Villaraigosa, as Mr. Villaraigosa has not yet demonstrated any anti-American sentiment as Mayor of Los Angeles. So that bit of satire was a little premature. However Gil Cedillo has proposed just such laws parodied by my little letter. Check out SB 591, which would make illegal aliens 'exempt' from impound laws for driving a car without a valid license. Here is the link

    http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/bill/sen/sb_055...6_sen_comm.html

Also, both of these men belong to an admittedly racists organization whose sole goal is to reclaim the southwest from the "Brutal Gringo Invasion" - here is the link from their own website -

    http://www.berkeleymecha.org/documents/epeda.html

Just don't think that these are innocent groups wanting to help an underprivileged minority. They are pure power hungry racists who find it easy to pit one racial group against another to acquire their power and they find it easy to do here where they can browbeat any opposition by raising the "racist" banner. These groups do not exist in Mexico as they do here. Because the Mexican racial group that maintains power effectively keeps them as an underclass, and even assists them in crossing the border illegally so as to rid Mexico of its problems.

Unfortunately you both have fallen into the trap of calling the comments "inappropriate, while not understanding its purpose. All satire is inappropriate to someone and the closer to the truth the more inappropriate the satire appears.

My problem is not with any racial group. I'll admit I have different reaction to different racial groups given different venues of interaction, but that a racist does not make.

I would more accurately be called a Nationalist. My disdain for these groups, while not for those they purport to represent, is their advocacy for those who are not citizens of this country to enjoy the rights and benefits of those who are citizens because they "deserve" them not because hey are willing to sacrifice for the ideals that allow the benefits to even exist.

OK this discussion could go on for quite some time, and may be better in its own thread, needless to say this vitriol I have is for the fundamental beliefs of these organizations that I believe the two men mentioned above represent. The Mexican who are lured and encouraged to come here illegally are wrong, not because their Mexican but because they are here illegally.

This also applies to any and all other Nationalities who are here illegally.

Also, any "corporation" hiring an illegal alien should be fined $10,000 per instance. So don’t say that I am all in the corporations pockets.

Yes, I would pay $2 a head of lettuce if I knew Americans picked it or I would pay $20, to wash my car instead of $8. But for the most part low labor rates have stagnated automation in certain industries. A loss of labor would spur design and automation to compensate.

Well, I didn't think of your post as satire. Nor did I find it funny.

I'm not hispanic, but I was offended. I found it in extremely poor taste and not in keeping with the spirit of this board.

    So there you have it.

Tom Lehrer and George Bernard Shaw you're not.

    My favorite satire.

    Devil,

I disagree with State Senator Gil Cedillo's efforts to have California driver’s licenses issued to those who are in this country illegally and to protect them from the sanctions of the law when they break it.

While I believe that we should debate this issue intelligently and articulately, it is improper to resort to racist personal attacks of the proponents of such laws. No one should have a Carte Blanche to slander every politician of Mexican American heritage whether or not they support such legislation or not.

I do not know Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa’s position on the drivers license legislation, but that is a state issue on which the mayor has little if any control (outgoing mayor Jim Hahn supported the driver’s license bill - http://www.lacity.org/mayor/oldpresss/mayo...01_05302003.pdf - I don't see you attacking him, is that because he is not brown skinned?).

As far as I know, Mr. Villaraigosa has never supported the Aztlán concept.

Your claim that you would more accurately be called a Nationalist reminds me of Germany in the thirties.

Well IsrAmeriPrius you have a point about the Jim Hahn critique, but I didn't lambaste him because he was white, just the threads did not present the same opportunity.

Honestly the problems I have with Jim Hahn would fill up its own Board!

Now, NOWHERE in my original post did I slander ANYONE based upon their race. Any implication as to such would be a gross exaggeration of the term. Now, there was some social commentary as between wealth based classes and even then it lambasted the rich stating that the wealthy classes in Los Angeles can be a tad bit hypocritical. (not all) Again nothing disparaged the poor.

This was satire plain and simple, while correct I am no Jonathan Swift, I can guarantee you this, you change Irish to Mexican in that tome and you would certainly be branded a racist, mostly because people would have no Idea that you are actually trying to help a certain group by pointing out their plight in a way that exposes the readers own foibles.

Last point, NEVER, equate American Nationalism with Nazi Socialism. I accept ANY person from any R,R,N,G or SO who want to come to America to be an American and respect all those cultures and take the same national pride in their countries.

This social commentary could go forever, suffice to say, the racist or Nazi badges are thrown around way to easily today, a practiced to be watched should the words lose their true horrific meanings.

    Thank you, and good night.

PS. Does anyone have any information on whether the free parking is going to continue next month?

    Hi All,

I just spoke to Max Reyes at LADOT (the contact person for this program) and he stated that the program will go through May 31st.

With the new administration preparing to take office no action regarding extending the program has yet taken place. The program is currently "in committee" and will be under review to determine its benefit versus cost to the city.

At this point all we can do is keep our fingers crossed. Before the election the scuttle that I got from the LADOT office was that they were very pleased with the program and were planning to extend the offering for at least one year allowing further data collection and possibly permantly, so we can all hope.

As for me, I plan to make the most of this one remaining day and will be touring parking meters about the city just to get my money's worth!

Take care all and have a great day! Oh, and think good thoughts for me as I have a job interview at 3pm and would really like to get it.

    TTFN,

    Tisza
