I wonder if the brake use is due to the cruise control applying them. It would use friction brakes exclusively, especially in mountain or hilly terrain. Even so, I would expect them to last longer that this.
You need to start asking to see the "worn parts". That will often change the honesty of the shop!

    Thanks everybody.
I use the B gear and have the battery at 8 bars easy before finishing the decent.
It is steep but I will be more suspicious before changing the pads again. Not planning on selling the car in the near future. At least he replaced only the front ones.

One other question- does the Prius have a warning light when the brakes get low?

? The prius will go into "B" mode automatically (doesn't indicated on dash) when the HV getting close to fully charged. You will notice the ICE RPMs rise as it gets closer to the top of the bat icon. Manually using B mode is like a preemptive strike I would think... when you know you have a long downhill coming and know your going to get a full battery, put it into B.

You are always in regen unless you "100%" battery or going less than 7mph or emergency stops or hit uneven surfaces while braking.

I've never noticed an increased braking effort with our Prius, even after a long down hill run, with the display showing fully charged. Could be it continues to charge a bit longer?

I did notice on our previous Honda Civic Hybrid (2nd gen). You really had to increase brake pressure once the charge topped up; it was nearly a safety issue: it could suprise you.

BTW, as efusco noted: this is drifting off-topic, sorry.

Even after the icon is full it continues to take a charge (ScanGauge) though reduced. After a long downhill it can be reduced to almost 2-4 amps charge and I would assume at that point braking is done nearly all by the disks. The transition is all but undetectable to me.

To the OP, if you don't mind my asking, what were you charged for the pad change?

I had my front brakes on my '11 apart the other day and didn't see the warning tabs on the pads.

I guess because they usually don't wear out fast or they weigh too much. :p All my previous cars had either the tabs or wear sensors and tabs.

The whole visit to the garage was about $340 of that roughly $230 brake related. Most car related things are very expensive in Israel.

Uh, that's not really that expensive. Shop rates here are above $100 per hour, plus whatever else they can charge you. $230 for front brake pads is about right.

Yachts are expensive you know! ;)

I usually do it myself, that's why that's expensive for me. ;) If I did my own slap and go, it would cost me about $45 using OEM pads.

In this case, cruise control is using regen ONLY, not pads with cruise control to slow the car, and this only applies to the Gen 3 Prius (Gen 2 didn't do this, nor did Gen 1 - though Gen 1 did allow cruise control WITH B mode which accomplished the same thing).
