I wouldn't bother. I don't know about CA, but in my state, the dealer usually put cheap plastic brackets with their name on the frame. I always take it off as soon as I drive off of the dealer's lot. I have no reason to give them free advertisement. You can pick up those license plate frame in online or any store selling auto items. Costs are from $5 to $20.

Yap, both front and back frames in my state too. I picked up plain black plastic frames at a local auto shop ~$10 for a pair.

Oh, I see. That plastic bracket, not the plate frames. I think it is included in all of US model regardless of front plate requirement in a particular state, isn't it? I remember a thread, someone wanted to delete the bracket and asking how to fill the hole left on the bumper cover.

I'm starting to like those plastic frames, dealership or whatever. Decades back, the plates here were painted. Now it's some sort of laminated plastic layered on, and within a few years the edges start to separate, and air/water starts working in. The plastic trim seems to help with that, or at least hides it.

Ours are made of metal. I think aluminum, but not sure. Durable enough to withstand normal wear and tear for the life of a vehicle or two. I have re-used an old license plate from my original car and passed it on at least twice now, so it has to be about 13 years old. I think they are still being made in state prisons.

@hill printed his own laminated plate for the front of his Model X. Perhaps he still has the photo to share.

Yeah, aluminum here too. But old-school paint has been replaced, with this lamination method, not very durable.

I see. Not sure whether my current license plate surface is painted or laminated. I've always had a license plate frame on mine. Have not noticed any peeling of a sort on mine, I don't think. I will check next time I have to apply a registration sticker on it.

My wife loves all of the compliments & Smiles & looks she gets when people spot it. Of course one of these days, mr. Barney Fife type police officer will read her the riot act for it once he spots it.

Yeah I think those plastic frames help, protect the edges, where the delamination begins. I was clever clogs for years: no plastic frames for me, then noticed the edges starting to fray, put the frames back on.
