Maybe I've lost it, but I could swear there was a little spring loaded door or cover in the fuel filler pipe of my Prius.

About 2 weeks ago, I experienced a low power, take off from standing start that almost proceeded to a bucking event when I pushed a little bit more firmly on the gas peddle. I had just refuelled the night before and in my mind thought about bad gasoline.

It never happened again since then, but I had to refill last night at a self serve station and I noticed that this little door that I could swear existed was no longer there, just a restriction funnel to make certain you could only fuel the car using the proper sized nozzle.

Now I wonder if the door was impeading the fuel pick up in the tank.

I'd be very happy to hear from you folks if there is in fact a little spring door in your cars fuel filler neck visible when you have unscrewed your fuel cap.

    Thanks, Roland.

Not on mine. I unscrew the filler cap and see the hole to the filler pipe (or the restricter funnel as you say).

    Thanks for the quick reply.

As I said, I questioned my imagination, it could after all have been feature on a previously owned car, and I wasn't certain.

I rented a new Ford Focus the other day and when you open the fuel door, there is no cap. Only the spring loaded cover that you push in to the filler throat with the gas pump nozzle. That is one of the first cars that I have seen that did not have a gas cap.

My Prius doesn't have a check valve either, just a pipe going down toward the tank.

The owners manual doesn't say anything about a spring loaded filler cover. I don't have one on my car. As long as the fuel cap is securely seated until "clicked", I'm not sure why it needs an additional safeguard.

I was like you and looked at it closely to make sure but there was no where to attach a gas cap of any kind. I also rented a Ford Fusion this summer and it was the same way. No gas cap.

Can any new Ford owners confirm what I saw with the rental Fords?

Yes my previous car, a Ford Mondeo, had the Ford "Easyfuel" system. No cap and a filler neck that only allows the correct fuel (diesel or petrol) to be put in, by the size of the nozzle on the pump. I found that water could get into the neck of the tube, when it rained, so I put a coffee jar lid over it.

I think because the cap is improved, you don't need that metal flap that exists in other cars.

Notice how it says to tighten until you only hear 1 click and it sounds different. In other cars I was taught to tighten three clicks normally? I could be wrong though.

Yea our car will only allow for one click. I know older gm's would keep clicking after it was tight.
