    Have a 2009 Prius.
    1) Prius sat for a month (was on vacation) with 2 bars (near empty). Returned and filled gas tank. Fuel gauge still read 2 bars.
    2) Using reprogramming fuel gauge per 'you tube'. No change, still reading 2 bars. If reprogramming successful wouldn't gauge read full?
    3) Been driving Prius around and now gauge drops to 1 bar. So, it appears gauge is sort of working.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank!

I never watched that YouTube video before do you have a link?

If the method doesn't include disconnecting the 12v battery for a few minutes, give that a try.

I would fill the tank again and see what it reads. Disconnecting the 12V battery will force the Combination Meter to recalibrate the gauge.

One caveat- you might want to clean the throttle body first. Removing 12V power will reset ECM adaptive memory- including learned throttle position. The ECM adjusts the throttle to compensate for gradual carbon "goop" buildup around the throttle blade. Resetting things can result in not enough air going into the engine and a "no start" condition.

If that doesn't change things, you will have to pop out the rear seat base and start testing the fuel gauge circuit at the tank connector. (I have replaced 4 Gen2 fuel tanks in the past few years- 2 were done because the fuel level sensor had gone wonky).

So you just replace the whole fuel tank assembly with equivalent used ones? Or do you go after specific components and not the whole thing?

In the NA model, you have to replace the whole fuel tank if you have a sender or pump failure. The sender for the fuel level, and also the fuel pump, are not separately serviceable given that these components are contained inside the NA version fuel tank's bladder.

You do have the option to use a used tank instead of a new one.

As mentioned, the NA Gen2 has a sealed fuel tank assembly. (There is a small plate for pass through of the wires and fuel pressure line. Unbolting it doesn't let you reach anything inside.)

The pump, level sensor, and bladder are not serviceable separately - gotta get the whole thing. So far none of my customers has wanted to gamble with a used tank. New from Toyota.
